We picked the Carnival Victory based on the great itinerary it provides, calling at 6 different ports on a 7 day cruise of the Caribbean. We boarded the ship in Barbados which was great as only around 100 passengers get to board the ship there. So it was a lot more calmer than boarding in San Juan were the rest of the 2700 passengers do. Boarding the cruise for the 1st time was a breeze, we dropped our cases at the port and they were taken over to the ship for us. Upon boarding we were offered a complimentary rum punch and checked in swiftly by friendly and helpful crew members. We then went for a look around the ship and had some lunch at the buffet. There was a huge variety of people on the ship from young couples and family's to older couples and single sex groups.
We checked into our stateroom which was nice and spacious with a balcony. The staterooms are very well kept and have plenty of storage space. The bathrooms are a good size with a good shower and lots of storage More
space also. The room had a king size bed and a separate settee seating area.
We later went down to attend the welcome meeting and safety briefing which only took 30 mins and was informative.
We had anytime dining which meant we could dine at anytime in the evening. The food in the restaurant was a lot better than we had expected offering a different menu each evening with a good selection of starters, mains and desserts.
We tried breakfast in both the buffet and the restaurant but mostly ate in the restaurant as the buffet was a bit chaotic at times and the food was not as nice as in the restaurant with waiter service. At lunchtime the buffet was the only option and sometimes the lines were quite long but there were different sections to the buffet and also a pizza place which had great tasting pizza. The quality of the lunch buffet was average but had plenty of choice from salads to fast food to a great selection of desserts. Iced Tea and lemonade were only cold drinks included all other drinks were paid from bar. Hot drinks included are tea, coffee and hot chocolate. The prices of the drinks were not really over inflated, paying around the same price as at an upmarket bar. There is a drinks package available but you would need to consume quite a bit to make it worthwhile purchasing.
The entertainment on the ship was good, there was always a different show on in the evenings including magic show, Broadway style show and variety shows. They had something for all ages and interests going on all the time like quizzes, bingo, comedy shows, different bars and lounges. There is a casino, mini golf, several pools and jacuzzis, water slide, plenty of sunbeds, jogging track, shops and nightclub. Our personal favourite was the comedy shows they had 2 different comedians doing different shows over the 7 days all very funny.
Getting on and off the ship was easy each day and they give you some good information about the ports. We took a few different shore excursions from Carnival and they were all very good and well organised.
The ship itself is a little outdated in some areas but all very well kept and clean. Our stateroom was also kept very clean each day by our very helpful and friendly stateroom steward. They provide a twice daily room service and put a towel animal in your room each evening which was always a nice touch on coming back to the room in the evening.
The crew are all really helpful and friendly and provide a great service in each and every area of the ship.
Overall we really enjoyed our first cruise on the Carnival Victory, it's a great ship with a great itinerary and a great crew. I would recommend to anyone. Less
