We live in south Florida, so I'm always looking for good last minute deals on cruises. Since this NCL deal was so cheap (only 6 days from departure), we decided to go ahead and book it, even though we had heard negative reviews of NCL from friends and family.
Cabin - We got an inside cabin, and were pleasantly surprised that there was room to move around inside. We took 2 RCCL cruises this summer, and the inside cabins were ridiculously small. We don't mind the inside cabins, since we live in Florida we are able to cruise more often, as long as we get a good deal on each one.
Dining - lobster was served in the MDR the first night, it came with red snapper and both were very good. I did think it was strange that lobster was served the first night, the server didn't even mention it. I noticed it listed at the bottom of the menu. That was definitely the best dinner we had on the Sky. The other meals were just okay. We did not have any good desserts during the whole trip, More
except possibly the blueberry cheesecake served in the embarkation day lunch in MDR. Even that was quite small and still partially frozen. So dessert is not NCL's forte. The buffet breakfasts were pretty good, we often had waffles and omelets. The lines were long in the main buffet sometimes, but you could also get omelets and waffles from the Italian restaurant nearby. We didn't try any specialty dining n this cruise. Mainly because I thought it would be disappointing, as on past cruises where we paid for specialty dining.
Itinerary - this was our first stop in Freeport. It was a rainy day, and the island was a dump. We walked around the port area a bit, then went back to enjoy the ship. If the weather was nice, I believe the beach was supposed to be nice. We know that Nassau is always a dump as well, however we love the Atlantis resort. We took a cab there for $4 each and bought the beach access pass, which includes lunch and Aquarium access. I guess I thought the aquariums were going to be more impressive, but the beach was excellent and well worth the cost. The private island was nice, we enjoyed the beach that day too.
Entertainment - We liked the comedian and caught both of his shows. However, the Magician/comedian was not very impressive. Also, the Gloria Estefan tribute was a bit of a joke, with some really out-there dancing. The woman was really nice though. We went to Deal or No Deal. It was disappointing since the same woman got called up for both games that night. The game was offered again the next night, but we didn't make it. We enjoyed dancing to the club music in the Stardust Lounge, but some nights they didn't start our music until after midnight. The white hot party was okay. Almost every song was some form of line dancing or had "steps" so you couldn't just enjoy dancing. I'm okay with a couple of those type of songs, but they just kept coming. Cruise director Richard (?) Matic was great, he was genuinely happy to be there, and we saw him around the ship often.
We will definitely go on NCL again, but we will still enjoy going on the more traditional cruise lines too. Also, we will probably go on the Sky again, since the price is so good, and we could really let loose on this cruise. The only part I don't care for is the itinerary, because there is nothing to do in any of the three islands except go to the beach. The shopping is no-good, and its not worth taking a tour. Less
Norwegian Sky Cruises to the Bahamas
We love the Atlantis resort, but the rest of Nassau is pretty much a dump. We avoid the straw market like the plague.
We always take a cab to Atlantis, then do some gaming. This time we treated ourselves to the Atlantis Beach access package. There are 3 beaches, the Cove beach is secluded and beautiful. The package also includes lunch from your choice of the counter service places, and aquarium access. It's much cheaper if you book it directly at Atlantis. They also give you a towel to use.
