Not what I expected

Sail Date: September 2012
Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean
Embarkation: Venice

Myself and my wife like cruising. We were lucky enough to cruise in June with the family on Carnival Breeze and had taken this cruise on Celebrity Silhouette in September as a special treat for an anniversary celebration. Over the years I had seen the Celebrity ships in various ports and the look and reputation of the ships appealed to me particularly the bigger ships. These ships are more expensive than all the other ships we had traveled on and we expected that by paying more you would get a superior cruising experience.

What we found was that this cruise line was no better or worse than any of the others we had cruised on. Lets take food as an example. The food in the Carnival Breeze was actually superior to the food on this ship. I was not expecting that to be the case.We did try three specialty restaurants Murano, Tuscon and QSine and these were good (and expensive) but in the main dining rooms where 95% of people eat the food was just average boring fare.Service in the More Cuvee dining room was no better or worse than any other ship we had been on.

Entertainment on board was superior to the Breeze but only because the Breeze was terrible in this department.Other ships such as liberty of the seas and Epic were miles ahead in entertainment compared to this.

Staff were very friendly and excellent to deal with.Perhaps this is an area they have a slight edge. The pool area is also better laid out than most other ships and a bed was always easily found. They had a pool butler who constantly went around removing towels from vacant beds to free them for the next user.

We enjoyed our cruise on Celebrity and met some very nice people. It seemed easier to meet new people in general on this cruise than other cruises we were on. Being a port intensive cruise meant however that the ship was dead after 11 o'clock as the guests (mainly 60+)went to their cabins to rest for the next day excursions. We found the price of excursions was crazy and as a couple you could hire a taxi and do the same route cheaper than the price the ship charged. If you can join up with another couple you will save 60% overall.

To conclude don't buy into all the hype about Celebrity being superior. It is a very fine cruise line but NCL Carnival and RC are just as good in the large ship category. Each will have their pluses and minuses but none are superior. Less
