There were supposed to be only 2 sea days on this cruise so it is fairly hectic with a port almost every day. St.Petersburg was the highlight for us, we did the 2 day ModerateTour with SPB Tours and found them to be really informative. Olga was our tour leader (14 participants) and she was very knowledgeable - we would recommend her and SPB Tours. We found the Moderate Tour to be all we wanted and were glad we hadn't chosen the Deluxe tour which was longer and more intensive. Unfortunately we were not able to visit Stockholm due to the weather conditions and this was a big disappointment, especially to my husband who was looking forward to seeing the Vasa Museum. Service on the Sun was excellent, the staff friendly and helpful and the ship itself is a nice size. We found breakfast in the buffet, which was often crowded, to be a bit boring with the choice not changing from day to day. Most of the meals in the dining room were fairly good but never really great. We tried both the Italian and French specialty restaurants to be only so-so and had no desire to return to either. Some other people thought differently and some agreed with our opinion. In the Italian I chose the calamari which was very good and the Pork Saltimbucca which was a bit dry and ordinary. In the French Bistro I chose Coquille St.Jaques - a bit tasteless, and Boullabaise which was nothing like The French dish of the same name. It was a thin red base, quite tasty, with potato and other vegetables as well as seafood. Not bad for seafood soup but certainly not Boullabaise that I expected. All in all, a bit second rate. There were some nice touches on this cruise that we haven't seen on others, e.g. when returning to the ship on port days, on the docks they provided either hot chocolate or other drinks and cakes or ice cream. However, there were no toiletries in the cabin, only dispensers of liquid soap and shampoo, and no chocolates on the bed at night and no newspaper as with some lines. Also prior to disembarkation we were not given any information and were left to find out for ourselves what their arrangements were. Some people did receive this information but we did not. To sum up, although this was our second Norwegian cruise, I don't think I would choose them again.

Cabin review: Balcony

BD8060
Cabin 8060' deck 8 towards the stern. We had no problems with this cabin other than the chairs on the balcony rocked in the wind making it noisy at night but easily fixed by laying them down when it was windy. The showers are very small but overall a comfortable cabin far enough away from the lifts and stairs to be quiet, close enough for convenience.

Port and Shore Excursions

Port
We did a ship's tour, Land and Sea, which gave a good overview of Helsinki but we found the city a bit "soul less".

Warnemunde is the port for Berlin, a 3 hour coach trip away. We didn't fancy the long drive so explored the very pretty little town of Warnemunde and then caught the train to Rostock, a short distance away. Travel instructions are available in the local port store. Rostock is much bigger and busier and an interesting old town.
Catherine Palace
Catherine's Palace has to be seen to appreciate how over the top it is. Not only huge and lavished with gold leaf (11 kg in one room) but to think it was built for one woman you can easily see why they had a revolution!
City Tour
A tour with a tour operator is a must in St.Petersburg. If you do a tour with an operator or with the ship you do not need a visa which in itself would be very costly. So much to see, so over the top with gold leaf but so very interesting.
Hermitage Museum
There is much to see at the Hermitage! We spent 2 hours plus and only saw a fraction of the exhibits but had a good overview. It would take years to see everything. Shouldn't be missed.
Port
We missed this port as the weather was deteriorating and the pilot couldn't guarantee that we would be able to leave the port so unfortunately, we didn't go into port and had a sea day instead.
Port
The old city of Tallin is in walking distance from the ship and is worth the visit. You don't need to do a tour unless you want details of what you are seeing. It is easy to spend a couple of hours here. Make sure to go to the viewing platform there as it offers wonderful views of the area.
