We sailed from Amsterdam on the Eurodam on August 17 for a 12 day cruise through he Baltic Sea. We paid extra for the Deluxe Verandah Suite to take advantage of the amenities...such as the Neptune lounge and concierge services.
WE found the ship to be very clean and well maintained in most areas although there were several public areas were the carpeting needed to be replaced.
Our first disappointment was our cabin...6059. It appeared at first glance that the room had been hurriedly cleaned and not properly vacuumed. The roll out sofa was not properly folded up and we had to call the cabin steward to have this done properly. The cabin was spacious but not very elegant (Our balcony suite on RCL was much more impressive.) The bathroom was large but again it did not appear to have been cleaned properly...and there was a crack in the bathtub. Not what you expect from one of the more expensive cabin on the ship.
Our room stewards, while very friendly and cordial, were not as others we have had on other cruises. We had to ask for ice several times for the bottle of champagne we received and I finally had to ask them to keep the ice bucket full so the champagne would not be ruined. we also had to ask for bath soaps after we used them...they should have seen that these needed to be replenished without being asked. The turn-down service was almost unnoticeable, if it wasn't for the towel animals and chocolates we would not have known that we received the service.
Next was the Neptune lounge...this is the first time we have been on a ship with a concierge lounge like this that did not offer complimentary beverages other then coffee, tea and juices! Not even sodas! On other ships soft drinks are complimentary as are limited alcoholic beverages. This was a real surprise and disappointment. The two young ladies serving as concierges were not knowledgeable on tours/excursions details but were very friendly and did provide my wife with exemplary service as it related to the repair of her handbag...at no charge. We appreciated that very much.
Lastly, the main dining room. We arrived at our first meal 30 minutes late and it took several minutes to find the maitre d to seat us...then the two of us were seated next to several large tables (8 or more) and our server did not acknowledge us for at least 10 minutes...I finally had to get up and tap him on the shoulder to notice us. The server was very apologetic but he continued to favor the large group through the meal that night and every night thereafter. He apparently had already established a bond with a large table of folks who spoke his language and he was busy "bonding" with them. While service improved marginally over the course of the cruise it was not up to what you would expect from this ship/cruise line.
We found the food to be very good generally and the choices on the Lido deck was exceptional. The Pinnacle dining experience was also excellent.
The embarkation process in Amsterdam was a bit prolonged and favored past cruisers over cabin type purchased.
One of the best things about the deluxe cabin is that our laundry and dry cleaning was included...we took advantage of this service quite a bit and the clothes were returned properly cleaned and in a timely manner.
We experienced no major issue with getting off or on the ship at the various ports...the staff was very professional and handled everything well.
While we enjoyed ourselves despite the mediocre service we received...we will not be placing the Eurodam or Holland on the top of our future cruise selections.
