The ship is mostly great...my main moan is about the a/con..you just can't turn it off, or even down, in your cabin. Hence I went down with a lurgy bug...cough, splutter, as did many on board. We ended up wedging our door open, just to get some good old fresh free sea air! Not good.
Verandah Stateroom 6049 was fine.it was an upgrade from VH Gurantee..but was a bit weird as it was a disabled room. However,we had more room in a way, but we had to get used to the slope onto the balcony, & the rather odd shower/wet room...no bath, but no problem. We were a tad surpirised there were no "spa type "slippers provided in the bathroom..the floor got very wet after showering, plus the vents to take the water away were quite"sharp".(Actually there were no slippers even in the Spa, so perhaps I was over optimistic!) we had no sofa in the room either, presumably to make space for a wheelchair...it wasnt a problem to us though. Comfy bed, lovely pillows. Strange little towel animals appeared More
every night! And choccies! Room stewards very good...always there, but never seen!
Foodin general was very good, but we chose to eat in MDR every night, we didn't like the scrummage in Lido self serve the coffee & tea here was poor We also dined in Tamarind & Pinnacle ..both good. Open seating in MDR worked well...except 1 night when they forgot us! We met some great people...& a few oddballs! That's Life!
Entertainment on board was better than we had heard! The HAL male group Cantare are almost as good as Il Divo...(but not quite as hunky!) Several acts "brought in" were good also..an English girl singer/impressionist & a Canadian comic were really good. Just can't remember their names...possibly due to too much vino?(We enjoyed the opportunity to take our own wine onboard to our cabin also!)
We also liked the onboard cinema...small but very comfy...good movies &popcorn! Need to get there early!
Loved Istanbul, &Santorini was gorgeous...pity we didn't get to see Mykonos due to high seas. The captain thought it would be too dangerous to tender there..we were glad he was cautious! We had extra time in Kusadasi instead...fighting off the Turks who kept trying to sell us diamonds & carpets. A good port itinerary..that's what made us choose this cruise, but we were also quite impressed with HAL...we may even try another cruise Less
Nieuw Amsterdam Cruises to the Eastern Mediterranean
Disabled room.. Slightly more floor space, no bath, no sofa but larger balcony ..facing backwards. Not nearly enough long hanging space for posh frocks! Wet room floor has sharp grids..needed slippers! Air con far too fierce...unable to adjust noise.
Fantastic city...lots to see. Need more time than we had..so we need to return. Busy, so can get stick in traffic. We saw fantastic Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia & Topkapi Palace. Missed Cisterns,Spice Market & Grand Bazaar due to not enough time. Next visit will def go on Bosphorus Cruise...others said was great.
We didn't go to Ephesus as we've been before...but if you haven't been there, do go...it's awesome! Kusadasi as a resort is ok...just too much hassle from shopkeepers trying to sell casts/diamonds. Put us off even looking at anything.
Bar in marina very expensive! But beautiful sunset, so perhaps worth it.
Stunning! Needed more time there. Huge queues for cable cars! Only 2 ships in..must be dreadfu queuing in the heatl if there are more! We avoided that, & avoided the mules (pooh!) & took a boat straight to Oia. Office is just by the queues...(Dakoutros bros.) Once off the boat, their Minibus takes you from Ammoudi port up to Oia. What a beautiful place, we will return ...it was not long enough to get lunch there, just coffees...pity. Back on minibus, then boat back to Fira port. Some then braved the mules upto Fira town..we went back to the ship...nothing in the town of Fira could be better than Oia?
Pleasant place...mainly for Diocletians Palace & to see a 3000 yr old Sphinx without travelling to Egypt! Good to have a coffee on the steps of the Luxor Hotel, right in front of the palace, & imagine how many feet have trodden those steps over the years! Lovely sea views on the coast of Croatia...a very pleasant way to enjoy a glass of wine or two on our balcony!
Stunning..but do NOT try to manoeuvre large cases thru Venice! Pre or post cruise stays...book a hotel near the cruise port. Lots of steps on those dinky looking bridges make it arduous with baggage. Best advice is to get transfers to or from ship if you do not plan to stay over.
