Dawn to Bermuda - Waiting to be Wow'd

Sail Date: August 2012
Destination: Bermuda
Embarkation: Boston

The short review: It was okay. Nothing really wow'd us and stands out to make us want to do NCL again.

The long review: Up till this point we have only cruised DCL. We love DCL and frankly went in with the expectation that this wasn't DCL so our standards we low enough that it wouldn't have taken much to wow us. It didn't happen. And yes it isn't fair to compare DCL and NCL so I am not going to.

Bermuda: Definitely want to go back to Bermuda, like right now. Will probably try RCI next time and go out of NY.

Embarkation was super easy. Debarkation was a pain as you loop through the ship since there isn't space in the terminal. Should be a better way of doing this - don't know what it is however.

Dining: Food was okay. Nothing stands out and makes me go - "GIVE ME TWO OF xxxxxx". Steaks were cut thin (1/2 inch) which of course means getting anything beyond well done is pretty much impossible - even the rib-eye at Cagney's had that over More done taste - after a point you just give up asking. A disappointment consider the $25 charge. Frankly you can get a better steak at Outback. A lot of stuff was warm, not hot. Turkey was salty. If they had dropped it in brine for a few days before hand I would understand, but then it would have been a lot more tender then it was. Best thing was the bread pudding but even that was inconsistent from night to night.

Kid's Club: Our girls (4 and 8) loved it. That being said they gave our programs at the beginning of the week. Let's just say that the programs were more 'guidelines' as to what 'might' be happening, rather than an actual program. There were times when the only reason the scheduled event actually occurred was because our girls asked when they were doing it.

Kid's Pool: First off the pool deck is slippery. Be careful. In the first hour on the first day there were four kids who wiped out on the deck. At least one kid chipped a tooth on the cruise (was riding down in the elevator with the parent as they were taking them to medical). There is no NCL supervision in the T-Rex pool area. There were also a bunch of parents letting their non-potty trained kids in the pools with swim diapers, and since there isn't any staff around you can imagine what the water quality was. Was also turned off by parents bringing buckets of beer into the kid's pool area - it just didn't seem appropriate.

Service: Overall it was fine, friendly and efficient. Everyone did their jobs but no one seemed to want to go above and beyond what you would expect. Kept looking for that wow moment but it just never happened.

Best part: Our youngest daughter got to present the Captain with flowers the last night on stage after the Bollywood show. She didn't actually want to give up the flowers which had everyone cracking up.

Overall this was all about destination for us, not the ship. And the destination did not disappoint. As I said we will be going back to Bermuda. Breakaway looks interesting but we will probably try RCI first. Hoping that the Dawn is not representative of all the NCL ships however. Less
