Family time on the Jewell

Sail Date: June 2012
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Seattle

9 family members ventured to Alaska aboard the Jewell. We were just one of many family groups vacationing together this July 4 week.
Cruising is a good way to vacation together yet able to do your own thing.
Jewell had an action packed list of things to do onboard sea and port day for all in our age group of 5 to 59. Balcony for husband and day camp for 5 year old.
Most of lunches and Breakfast eaten at Garden Cafe. Entire family gathered at the Tsar for dinner. Son-in-law's dietary needs were handled by special staff member. SIL pre ordered dinner menu, gluten free bread came the minute we sat down. Cookies to go as we left. Such good service at Tsar left little need to venture to ships other restaurants. Garden cafe could be a little crowded for breakfast or lunch, however Mama's Kitchen was open for overflow and was nicer and quieter. Grilled food, carving station and salad bar were excellent. Outdoor grill on sail away parties were scrumptious. Only concern More was the food bar dedicated to Indian cuisine. Unsure if so much of one style of food is commonplace or because cruise had Indian families crusing. Will be interested to see if this is the same on next cruise planned for late Sept.
2 teen aged girls marked events they wanted to attend at Club Downunder. They met plenty of friends. The late night dancers and 24 hr. Blue Lagoon kept them up late and impossible to wake up in the mornings.Shows were good as were lounge acts. Hypnotist Brenda Kaye's show was so believable. The weight loss session had me hoping it would work.
Port hours were just not long enough. If you did any excursions, no other time for anything else. The Pearl was waiting of us to vacate berth at each Port. More time needed on land.
Best excursion was the zip-lining. Also did White Pass railroad, Mt. Roberts, and glacier. Wished we had taken the Tracey Arm excursion to get closer to Sawyer glacier. Took Victoria town tour but son could not get off ship as he had a felony in US. He and 5 year old enjoyed the pool as this day was our only day in the 70's. Pool was heated entire time just cold days.
Overall a wonderful vacation. Kids and grand-kids want to travel again next year. Less
