Ship Facts: Monarch of the Seas Review (by Cruise Critic!) | Monarch of the Seas Deck Plans
Monarch of the Seas - Mexican Riviera

This was my fifth cruise, the previous 4 being with Carnival, and this was my first with RCCL. I wanted to try a different line to see how it compares to Carnival. RCCL failed pretty badly unfortunately.

My biggest disappointment was that on Sunday we sat dead in the water about 10 miles off of San Diego. Never moved, even when I went out on deck at about 10pm Sunday night! I've taken the 3 day Carnival to Ensenada and both times they cruised up and down the So. Calif coast, thru the channel islands after leaving Ensenada. This alone will probably not make me want to give my money to them in the future, even on a cruise where they would have to be moving.

The staff was un-informed, maybe they were a brand new group. But our room steward and waitress and asst. waitress were outstanding! Even though the ship went thru a refurbish a couple years ago its really showing its age. Stains on the carpets in the common areas, bad painting around the windows, etc.

It was a more reserved crowd than Carnival, though there were people partying. The decor is a lot more brass and wood, Carnival being a lot more bright colors and neon. So I did get a lot more sense of refinement if that is a good word to use, but not stuffy. Pizza machine was broken all weekend. And paid extra to have sushi in the specialty restaurant 2 hours after leaving L.A. but they had no Unagi?! And the cost for what they did have was overpriced.

So average is the best I can give them. And though I have decided my cruises from now on will be a minimum of 5 days, since 3/4 days is just not long enough, I will go back to Carnival unless there is a vastly different price break. Just for the fact that on Carnival the inside cabin rooms are more than twice the size of RCCL.

If you would like to email me please feel free. :)
