RCL-Independance of The Seas

Sail Date: June 2012
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Southampton

Set sail from South Hampton,England on June 30 for a 14 day cruise to the Western Mediterranean.Embarkation went so smooth although we were prepared and also had suites.Upon arrival to the rooms we found them still dirty. Windows terrible, trash still in rooms hair on bathroom floor and even a dirty band aid sticking to the counter. We had 5 suites and 3 out of five were dirty. They corrected the problem and sent flowers. Also If you enjoy having a drink and a cigar on your balcony while sailing away from port, forget it.
We went to our dinner that night in the main dining room and found the food to be mediocre at best with a very limited menu. That alone was disappointing but our assigned waiter so bad that by day three when the Head Waiter made his rounds we unloaded on him. His name was Jose and the man really knew his job and how to rectify situations. He checked on us every night we chose to eat there (ate in speciality restaurants 4 nights). He watched our waiter from afar and More sometimes waited on us himself. A real asset to RCL.
Everybody on board seemed to be very pleasant and happy with daily greetings and smiles with the exception of the Casino cashiers and some dealers.
Getting on and off the boat in the ports was easy and fast.
Our ports were wonderful although most would opt to give up Vigo for 2 sea days on the way home.
Took 2 port tours by RCL. The one in Cadiz was with fast paced walk though the city ending with a Flamingo dance (great dancers). They should let you shop in the beginning because after Flamingo dance the shops are taking siesta!
I have taken many cruises and loved this one because I was with my family (No children) but RCL has lost some of it's luster. Also wanted to say service in Chops Restaurant was sub par.Had to ask 2 times for a per diner cocktail which ended up comig with the dinner where we were having wine. After the dinner all waiters disappeared and we waited 20 minutes just to order desert after flagging someone down. Portofinos is much better but why they would have this kind of restaurant right under the children's play area and arcade confuses me. The host kept apologizing. Less

I think they need to maybe give this port more time. I loved what I saw but I needed more time.

This is a true highlight. We had 6 people and pre booked a private Tour company called Luxury Italian Tours. Mercedes Benz van 500 Euro without tip.You tell him what you want and he sets it up. Our guide (driver) was Simone.Easy on the eyes!He speaks perfect English and tours you places no one else would think of. He called ahead and made reservations at a restaurant downtown near Sergio Ferragamo. Low prices and great food.

Do your tour up the cable car to the Top of the Rock after spending some time shopping i the main square and main street. But the greatest place on the entire cruise to eat was HERE in Gibraltar. It is called Pepe's. The tables set on the marina. Fabulous food, great prices and wonderful people.Fresh, fresh seafood. He even showed us the picture of the fish we ate caught the day before!Ask a cab driver to take you or just walk to the marina and ask someone for Pepe's.

Took a private tour through Luxury Italian Tours. Victor was the driver/guide. 500 Euro for six people in a Mercedes Benz Van. He can be a little abrasive but is knowledgeable. Get tickets to the Vatican and the Colosseum prior to the cruise or you will be standing in line along time.Print them and have them with you. Trevi Fountain a must.

Not much to see.The people are nice but it has the feeling of a very poor boarder town.We sat down to enjoy some fresh oysters at a sidewalk cafe and were accosted every 5 minutes by vendors (perfume, watches etc.) They need to skip this port for 2 last days at sea.
