A wonderful Adventure on the Viking Helvetia
Destination: Europe - River Cruise
Just back from Viking Helvetia Basel - Amsterday. We are exhausted but loved every second of the cruise. We went 2 days before to Basel. Took one day on train to Lake Lucerne. Used the Golden Pass which we bought at train station. It includes train, boat, cograil up to Mt. Pilatus, gondola down and local bus back to lake Lucerne.Had a wonderful time in Lucerne and rode train back to Basel. Pass was around 300 francs for 2.One of the best parts of our trip.
Loved river cruising as there is always something to see on the Rhine River. Tours start every morning at 8:30 and we wore ear pieces so could hear every detail. Some bus rides(Black Forest was the longest) but walked over cobblestones in every German or France town. Marksburg Castle was a highlight. I researched castles before trip as we viewed about 30 in 2 days from the boat.
We took two optional tours we paid for. Colmar and Winery in Alsace. Highly recommend these.
We ate local food for lunch a couple of times and 1 More dinner. The food on the Helvetia was much better than any cruise ship we have been on. Lots of local flavor, especially vegetables.
Crew is very helpful and friendly. We went on top lots with a light jacket as windy in June. No rain except when on boat.
I took video and so glad as the homes, vineyards and sights look like a picture postcard.
We made great friends, all ages on boat (most 50 - 70) One family with children who were well behaved and good students.
It is not a relaxing vacation though guess it could be if you didn't take tours.Casual clothing makes packing easier.
We will probably not do it again as flight over from Florida is sooo long. We did this through Viking so no non stop.
An experience we will alway remember. Less
