7 Night Hubbard Glacier & Inside Passage Alaskan Cruise
EMBARKATION: - The whole embarkation process was surprisingly quick and stress free. We arrived at Canada Place around Noon and we in the Island Cafe by 12:45. There was a bit of a line up as we approached the security checkpoint but the process went quickly. There was absolutely no line as we approached the Celebrity Cruise registration desk and within minutes we were welcomed on board with the choice of either champagne or mimosas. I applaud Celebrity Cruises for this wonderful welcome to its cruisers. This simple touch helps to start the cruise off on a happy front.
CABIN: - My wife and I chose to an inside cabin as we didn't plan to spend much time in our room other than for dressing and sleeping. Cabin 5011 was located at the front of of the ship luck forward of the Shore Excursion/Guest Relations desk. This location was optimal as it was "off the beaten path" and the only foot traffic came from those with rooms in that area. The stateroom was beautifully and efficiently More laid out and quite spacious for its size. We had plenty of storage for clothing and such and still had ample room to move around. Our room steward "Freddie" was exceptionally accommodating and always pleasant. Our room was always kept clean and tidy and the nightly turn-down service was an added bonus. It was like a magic fairy came into our room and tidied up while we were out having fun.
Dining - A definite 15/10 to the kitchen staff of the Century. Regardless of where we chose to eat (Island Cafe, Cova Cafe or MDR) the food was simply divine.
-The Island Cafe is a casual buffet style restaurant which offers a wide variety of different types of food to choose from during each meal. At breakfast you have the choice of English Style, American Style, Asian, Fresh Egg/Omelets, waffles, pancakes, fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, just to name a few. During lunch there is a Panini station, Stir Fry station, Pasta station, roast beef, salads, soups, cold cuts, breads/rolls, etc.
-The Main Dining Room is a more elegant sit down style restaurant which offers a limited selection of standard breakfast fare which includes such things and pancakes, eggs, fresh fruit and toast. At dinner time diners are presented with two different menus. The left side menu stays the same from day-to-day while the right side menu offers a new variety of appetizers, soups/salads, entrees and deserts each night. Some highlights include Fillet Mignon, Lobster, Mussels, Lamb Shank, Salmon, Trout. Deserts include baked Alaska, chocolate souffle, tiramisu. A tremendous THANK YOU to our waiter (Severon) and the Maitre D (Jayson) for helping to making our meals magical and memorable every day.
Entertainment - The on-board entertainment was absolutely incredible. I have nothing but the highest praises for all of the entertainers. The on board acapella group (Aquadio) absolutely delighted the crowd and always left us wanting more. Jay Matioli (magician) was simply amazing with his quick slight-of-hands tricks. Lounge singers/musicians Charlie Butler and Michelle Rafferty helped to set the mellow mood in the various lounges while the Celebrity Singers and Dancers entertainment the Theatre audiences with some fantastic Broadway-calibre productions.
PORTS: - We visited Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Ketchiken and cruised the Hubbard Glacier. All were charming and unique in their own right. Each port offered an vast array of different choices of shore excursions along with a large selection of gift/souvenir shops. Captain Karamounous did a fantastic job of getting us to within a mile of the Hubbard Glacier, where we remained in a constant spin cycle for nearly and hour and were witness to some fantastic calving of ice off the glacier.
STAFF: - Enough can not be said to describe the friendliness of the staff on board the Century. Each and every member of the staff and crew were absolutely delightful, and always went out of their way to please the cruisers. Cruise Director, John Grantham, did a great job of introducing the nightly theatre entertainment as well of keeping cruisers informed on the activities that would be available each day.who was excellent, John was a constant source of entertainment through his behind-the-scenes stories of his past as a Hollywood stuntman, and joining the band as a singer and guitarist for the party nights.
Another special thank you to Phil (Guest Relations Manager) for adding my wife and I to the guest list for a exclusive tour of the Bridge as well as a tour of the ships Engine Room. Both opportunities combined with a tour of the Main Galley helped to put into perspective just how daunting and sometimes chaotic operations that go on behind-the-scenes.
CONDITION OF THE SHIP: - Overall the Century appeared to be in good repair although it is one of the older vessels in the fleet and is starting to shows signs of tiredness and outdated decor. The glistening of the polished chrome and the richness of the wood throughout the ship help to add a touch of old-world flare from the days of yester-years. We didn't use the spa, or the pools, but both looked great. Rumour has it that The Century is due for dry-dock sometime in 2013 where it will receive some timely TLC.
Overall, our first cruise was a great experience, and I felt that a lot of that was down to Celebrity which as a company seemed to be very focused on quality and customer service. For the rate we paid, the cruise was excellent value and I would certainly cruise again with Celebrity given a suitable itinerary. Thank you to the staff and crew of the Celebrity Century for helping to make our honeymoon a memory that will last a lifetime. Cruising with Celebrity makes you feel like Royalty. Less
