Wonderful Cruise!

Sail Date: June 2012
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Other

We just returned from an absolutely wonderful cruise of the W. Med.

I built in a day in Rome both before and after the cruise, which gave us time to decompress from the long flight and to see the sights of Rome.

Because of NCL rules regarding cabins (must be a 21 year old in every cabin), we had to all be in one cabin. This caused me a lot of stress beforehand, worrying about being crowded, where to put clothing, suitcases etc. This all turned out to be no problem at all..there was more than enough room for us all. They made the bed into twins, the couch made a very comfortable bed, and another bed came down from the ceiling that the 18 year old claimed for her own and loved sleeping there. Even when it was pulled down, there was plenty of room to get past it to go out to the balcony and to sit on the couch to watch soccer games on tv. Despite many naysayers, we all liked the separate shower/toilet/sink idea and none of us felt the frosted glass walls were More an issue

The kids loved the Teen Club, Blue Man Group, Cirque, bowling, rock wall, gym, etc etc. They also really enjoyed the food...we never ate in a specialty restaurant and found the food more than adequate. I would hate to guess how many ice cream cones the two boys ate in the week!

Were there some "issues"? Yes, of course there were. With four people(1 set of siblings and two generations) there are always going to be a few. But we went into it with the attitude that if one of us got stressed, the others would give them time to work it out. Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Epic 13034

Cabin 13034 Great room! Really good location..very near the elevator (but never heard them) and steps (just two flights up to pool bdeck and food). Lots of room. With four in a cabin, I was worried, but there was more than enough room for all of our stuff (we literally had empty cabinets left over) and all four suitcases and backpacks fit under the beds. The upper bed pulled down from the ceiling, but there was plenty of room to get past it and into closets and out to the balcony. The grand daughter who slept in it said it was very comfortable. We personally liked the separate shower/toilet/sink area..made it easier for us all to get ready at the same time.

Port and Shore Excursions

City Tour

(5.5)
A good way to see the city and then we could go back later and visit areas we wanted to see better (Las Rambas)

This was a tendered port. When you get off the tender and walk to the end of the pier...turn left and you are immediately on a beautiful sandy beach. There were many areas where for 12 Euros you could rent a comfortable lounger and umbrella. The one we stopped at (blue striped umbrellas) had a delightful young man who seemed to enjoy his work and had a great personality. We also took the little train, which was a good way to see other areas of the city.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

We had a wonderful guide who made this trip very enjoyable. My three grands climbed to the top of the tower while I watched and took pictures from below. I hope that when they are old like me, they will see a picture of the tower and remember this experience.

City Tour

Basilica of Notre Dame de la Gorde What a wonderful old church with an amazing view. The guide, Paco, was a true joy. One time when we were stuck in a traffic jam he got out and personally directed traffic (said he had to go show them how to drive). I am in awe of the ability of the bus drivers to manipulate the huge buses through VERY narrow streets!

Capri Walking Tour

Hydrofoil trip out to the Island and then the Funicolare up to the top. What a beautiful island with wonderful flowers.

Pompeii Walking Tour

Again, MANY tours were there at same time, which made for a lot of congestion in the main sites. It was a very hot day, and there is not much shade to be found inside the site. At the entrance there were lots of seats, but there were stern waiters who would not allow anyone to sit in a chair unless they placed an order. The sight could definitely add benches for visitors in many locations. The streets were also hard to walk on and you had to keep a close eye out for toe stubbers. However, it was truly an amazing place and worth all the sun and pushy people.

An amazing city! We took one of those open air buses to make sure we saw everything and then picked what we wanted to go back to later in the day. We also had the most amazing experience when we took a night time Segway tour of many sights we had seen by daylight. It was magical. (For those who have never ridden a Segway..they are very easy to catch on to and really a LOT of fun!..If this uncoordinated 65 year old grandma can do it..you can!)
