Celebrity delivers the best big ship experience again
After touring Italy by rental car for 8 nights, we finally turned in our car at the Naples airport. We took a 25 euro taxi to port of Naples and boarded the Silhoutee a day late. This was planned for us by our T/A and we had a "downline" boarding document. It was much more convenient since we spent the last 3 nights pre cruise in Ravello on the Amalfi coast and did not have to return to Rome for embarkation.
Embarkation was not good even though they knew we and about 25 others were
coming. We waited a good 20 minutes until an officer came to the gangway and
checked our documents. We had to lug our bags thru Port of Naples security,
needed to use restrooms which were out of order. This made the 20 min wait seem like an hour or more.
When were were finally onboard, our guarantee balcony stateroom, 6238 was ready and our stateroom attendants had our bags delivered right away for us. They ordered us coffee and light breakfast from room service, gave us a quick More safety briefing and just made us feel so welcome. Our stateroom staff thru the entire cruise was more than excellent.
This guarantee was a real gem, while on deck 6 it was on the back of the hump with a much larger veranda than normal. There was one small utility boat to the right an just below, not a problem for us.
Location by the main elevator bank was a very big plus as well.
I'd book this cabin again without hesitation.
This was a very port intense trip so we spent little late night time watching shows etc. However the casino was brutal, never saw blackjack dealers clean out more people so quickly.
We are Celebrity Elite and thought the perks were very nice. (especially the nighly cocktail hour in the Sky Lounge). The Captains Club hostess Dawnette (Dawne) as she preferred was so enjoyable, just a great
down to earth personality. We really hit it off well with her.
Dining, we had Select and found a wide variety of service. We did not reserve
a table but just walked in when we were ready. Food was always at least very good, sometimes excellent. Service was mixed, again sometimes very good sometimes not.
One night we experienced something that should get a waiter fired.
We were last ones seated with 2 other couples and one of them we found out had been sitting for over 20 minutes and only had water so far. They were a bit older than us and very quiet. We could see however they were getting a bit anxious. Everything from this waiter was S L O W. After the appetizer finally arrived, now over an hour into their dinner they got up and left because they wanted to go to a show. The waiter finally came back and
asked where they went. We told them they had to leave because the service was extremely slow and they had a show to attend. He gruffly replied "you know this is not McDonalds here".
All of us could not believe what we just heard especially after an hour and only the app delivered. The dining room hostess just of blew this off like no big deal.
After this we said we would not be seated in his area again.
We at breakfast and a few lunches in the Oceanview cafe, don't know how they do it but its about the best buffet food we've had on any ship. Well done!
We ate in Murano one night and felt it was good but overrated. Not worth the
The itinerary included mostly new but some repeats for us.
We did one ships excursion and had mixed feelings. We did the Acropolis in Athens and ended up with a bilingual tour so we had an english speaking and German speaking guides. This was fine until they got in an arguement about
something, not quite sure but it got a bit uncomfortable.
The ship also had a $10 shuttle in Mykonos that was a royal rip off, the took you about a half mile at most dropped you off where you still had to walk quite a distance to anything. Mykonos used to be a tender port and you would get dropped off right in town.
In Crete, Celebrity also had a shuttle bus, pricy don't remember what they quoted but were told its the only way to town about 7 miles away.
I looked out off our veranda when arrived and saw a ticket booth, bus stop and tourist info booth. Turns out the local bus runs every half hour 2 euro round trip and the locals in the TI booth were so helpful handing out maps of the town, recommending sites to see etc.
Shame on you Celebrity for lying just to line your pockets.
Valetta Malta was our favorite, what a colorful history this country has. Locals were so friendly and proud of their herritage. we had good reasonable food in the restaurants fun shopping and lots of historical sights. The ship could have stayed a lot longer!!
The Canon salute as we sailed away was over the top, thanks to the Maltese
Kusadasi Turkey was a repeat so we visited our friends in the leather shops.
Made some amazing purchases 4 leather jackets, had a lot of fun bargaining with them.
They act so insulted when you make a low offer but it was all good in the end.
They even bought us lunch and sat us ouside with all our bags from their store.
Likely it was to show us off to their competiton, Fun!!
Overall it was an excellent trip, Celebrity offers a consistently good product in the deluxe mass market niche.
Thanks to most of the staff of the Silhouette for an enjoyable 13 days! Less
