We enjoyed our cruise on the Radiance. We were traveling with family and the ship had activities for all ages. The kids enjoyed the warm pools even though the outside temps were in the 50's.
The ship had been refurbished last year...new flat screen TVs in cabins, new carpet in cabins. The sheets were of a good quality and our steward was always smiling and did a good job. However, there was no hand lotion or shower cap in the bathroom. Only some shampoo in a dispenser in the shower. I had expected more of Royal Caribbean. Guess that is one of the differences between a 4 and 5 star ship. The SHOWER was the SMALLEST I have ever been in on a cruise ship. Quite difficult to maneuver, shaving your legs only possible if you put your leg in top of the toilet and then get water all over the bathroom. Also, cabin related, the safe was old and sometimes did note work well. On 3 occasions (3 different days)the ships toilets on our deck 8 (per our call to maintenance) would not work. When we called the front desk they said they were working on the problem. Seems to me they have some sort of plumbing problem that was a nuisance to us.
Our evening meal was in the my time dining area. Our waiter, Saurabah, was excellent as well as his assistant Ariel, they did a wonderful job with our family and we appreciate their professional talents. The food was good, not great. The quality of the beef could have been better. They offer 3 courses, not that we need 4 but sometimes like a soup and salad along with our entree.
The Windjammer offered fresh fruit daily and good salad fixings, good breakfast ham and turkey breast some days. The pizza needs improvement....too much like frozen pizza.
The shows were OK, not outstanding. Paul, the cruise director had lots of energy, and we came to enjoy him more as the cruise proceeded. Several nights there was only one show at 7:45. Especially we liked the Captain's Talk and pictures on day 6. I think that the quality of the pictures on the big screen could have been better though....just saying.
Of note, our cabin 8588 was quite noisy when ever there were activities in the Centrum....beware that any cabin in that stack can be LOUD when 70's music is being played etc in the Centrum.
We have cruised quite a bit over the last 10 years and would rate this ship a 4, I can see and feel the difference 4 vs 5 star. We did appreciate the welcome back party/cocktail hour. Good finger food.
The entire staff was always helpful and deserves kudos for that.
We did take advantage of the "valet luggage service". We were flying with United Airlines and our bags arrived at our home airport on time! We did have a mix up with the paperwork from the front desk. But, when we went down to question why we did not get our luggage tags/for the valet service it did get worked out....took about 15 minutes though. Then the boarding passes had the wrong seat assignments, we had to work that out in Anchorage.
We (arranged on our own) were picked up on time by Anchorage Tours and Transfers, Dan did a good job narrating along the way to Anchorage and we enjoyed the nature center stop too.
