Action packed culture and dining experience

Sail Date: May 2012
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Barcelona

As experienced cruisers with the big cruise lines including Celebrity, we were very comfortable and well served on the Solstice class ship.

The embarkation process was excellent and we did receive the favorable check-in that a suite purchase is promised.

The food as with all Celebrity cruises was excellent and without room for any complaints. The variety in the free dining areas and service coupled for a much better experience than the less luxurious lines like sister line RCCL.

Entertainment was stale and at times embarrassing. We chose to stay away from shows after the first few nights due to the subpar quality. Dancing was usually only available in the main foyer area of the front desk with the same band playing the same music almost every night.

The public areas were understated and contained some interesting art. Dark wood and dark rooms kept most rooms feeling yes "DARK". No happy party feel to any of the decor. Mature, moody and slow More characterized the feel from the decor.

The unique lawn area did present some fun entertainment playing bocce ball and other lawn type games. This was a pleasant surprise. Overall shipboard activity was missing excitement and options. The library was multi-storied in the centrum area but the Team Earth room below it seemed to serve little or no purpose what-so-ever. The prettiest lounge in the upper deck forward, Sky Lounge, was not used in any interesting way except for Karaoke and Captain's Club Parties.

The most frustrating experience on the cruise was the very poorly managed Florence/Pisa/LaSpezia port stop. Since we did not follow the other cruise lines to Livorno we had to tender into LaSpezia and take comfortable buses on very long (2+ hours each way) trips to Pisa and Florence. The Celebrity sponsored excursion did not provide adequate facilities for us. We reached Pisa and was given less than an hour to use a woefully small bathroom facility and see the leaning tower. This was just plain cruelty. Women had to wait in a lengthy line that took almost the entire hour to get access. The problem was one small restaurant was used by all the competing cruise lines. This would not have happened if we went to Florence first as promised on the excursion print-out. Please do not take the combined Pisa/Florence excursion if you love your wife and children! Take an excursion that does less.

The remaining excursions and ports were excellent. Ajaccio, Corsica was boring and more of a rest day than activity day.

Celebrity was elegant yet boring compared to the more youthful cruise lines like sister line RCCL or NCL.

You will enjoy and find something to like. We did love the Murano specialty restaurant and the Tuscany restaurant. Less

Cabin review: Celebrity Solstice 2150

We had cabin 2150 which was a suite in the top aft deck 12 area. Roominess was awesome and the butler was even better. The bathroom was great and the real tub and shower was very refreshing after long days in port. Room service was timely and tasty. The slippers and robes were comfortable. The deck was great for sight seeing and eating a quiet breakfast.
