Veendam cruise from NYC to Bermuda 5/20 to 5/27 This was my 55th cruise and 6th HAL cruise
Pre-cruise we flew into NYC 2 days early had a great time meeting with friends and seeing plays, saw 3 excellent plays "Ghosts" "Mama Mia" and "the Best Man" man had a great cast James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, John Larroqutte, Candice Bergen , Eric McCormack and Michael McKean. ( got all the tickets ½ price via TCKS on Broadway), had some great pizza and pastrami. Stayed at Hilton on 53rd and 6th.
We arrived at noon at the dock and were in out suite about 20 mins later, we were in suite s016 which was very nice with a huge balcony and a dressing room along with a king size bed.
Ship : this was the smallest ship we have taken in many years and wasn't sure how we would like it but ship was in great shape without any visible problems, we did have bad weather on 1st 2 nights and ship was rocking pretty badly ( not a major problem for us) . There was a excellent piano player and we spent most nights sitting at the piano bar, we did see 2 shows a comedian who was pretty good and a so-so Broadway review. Food was a pleasant surprise I thought the food was excellent we ate at the MDR 1st 2 nights ( food was far superior to MDR on Westerdam and Zuiderdam) had 2 dinner at Canaletto which were very good ( no charge ) and 3 dinners at the Pinnacle which charge 25 dollars) we had a excellent steak which was cooked perfectly each night . We had some minor problems with our suite a/c was not working that well and it was adjusted on 1st night and was ok for cruise could have been a little cooler. Played Trivia each day and won several games. Would not take this ship to Caribbean since it has only one real pool which had too many children.
Suite Perks: this is 2nd cruise on Hal that we had a full suite and took advantage of all the perks, had breakfast in Pinnacle each morning, attended 2 cocktail parties with captain used the free laundry dry cleaning a few times and had a lunch with wine at the Pinnacle.
Bermuda : we knew we had a 50 percent chance of rain for our entire stay so we didn't book and shore excursions via the ship, but did a 1 hour horse and carriage ride thru Hamilton that was very nice (this was 100 for the 2 of us if booked with ship , it was 119) and we did take a ferry to St George On Wednesday and had a very nice lunch at Tavern by the Sea .
Post Cruise, took short taxi ride to Michangelo hotel at 51th and 7th ( excellent hotel ) did the Central park zoo them the MOMA museum then meet with friends again, next day went to lunch at Becco at 46th st between 8th and 9th very nice Italian restaurant with a huge wine list and all bottles prices at 25 dollars, then we did the 9/11 memorial then went to BB King nightclub in Times Square , then it was back to Dallas
