5 day Alaska sampler

Sail Date: May 2012
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Vancouver

We had an all over terrific time onboard the Star. Cabin service is not something we're used to and we constantly seemed to interupt our steward or "be in his way" when we went in and out of the cabin constantly throughout the day. We had fabulous accommodations and the food at Horizon lived up to our memories of our transAtlantic voyage. We're not big on the formal dining aspect. We had an incredible meal at the Crown. We had lovely service in the Lotus Spa for some real "girl time" and we had the outdoor hottub on the Neptune deck to ourselves most of the time.

Having been to Alaska a few times before we thought we should really try the cruise route. Who better to do so with than Princess? According to us and the folks we talked with on board, no one does it better. We really enjoy the ambience and appreciate the slightly more mature passenger set.

One thing, I felt that the designated smoking area on the Neptune deck was really neglected to the point of almost More always being dirty???

Wistful about balcony smoking. Enough!.
This is a SHORT cruise. Port times of 6hrs or less.
Seattle dock 3 miles out of downtown was disappointing.
Yes, it was cold and rainy but it wouldn"t be May in Alaska if it wasn't!
I say go now and avoid the crowds not to mention, people are still happy to see tourists. Less

Cabin review: Star Princess Oceanview Double with Balcony Caribe Deck L206

L206, Lido deck balcony second from the very front end of the hallway. Same deck as the pook areas and Horizon court so very easy access. Minimal traffic in the hall. Lots of stomping overhead and I don't know why. No cabins overhead. Secluded with the whole ocean outside your balcony. Yes, we did the buff thang! Ample space with the beds converted to queen. Good water pressure. Lots of hot water. Potable water until the last day when it had a decidedly chlorine aftertaste. Drawback - being at the end of the steward's list of things to do can get. He actually told us he didn't replace out pool towels because he ran out before he got to our room. What? We'd love this room again!

Port and Shore Excursions

Mendenhall Glacier

(5)
Wonderful nature hike with well informed guide who obviously loved what she was doing. We had plenty of time for pictures and questions. The walk was the right amount of variety for a nice workout without feeling overdone. The glacier view across the lake was awesome. Not enough time for the visitor's center but it left us wanting more anyway! :o) Kudos!

Whale Watching

(5)
Hurried due to late docking but only at first. Boat captain did his best to show us numerous whales in quiet bay. Snacks were appropriate for the venue. Early season to spot anything. Great sense of cooperation between the various ships that were on tours in the bay at the time. Really pleasant people.

Kayaking

Not exactly like the videos. Maybe we were their first tour or something but the staff felt like they were out for a lark on their own. Being a couple of 50 somethings, we played catchup the whole excursion. Never stopped long enough for us to get out the cameras. Kept trying to get everyone to race! Went around the ocean side of the island right out of the protected cove I expected my first kayaking trip to be in. We made it but I was hopping mad by the end all the same. Nobody at the gift shop at the end of the tour to dole out the free cocoa or make a pot of coffee. Then rushed onto the bus for the ride back to town. $220 for two hour kayak rental and a round trip bus ride. Not shiny.

Long long long boarding process. No real info down the line afer line. Needs background music or something!
