My husband and I took the Viking Cruise up the Elbe River, flying from London to Berlin, embarking at Magdeburg and visiting various ports on the way to Prague, from which we flew back to London.
This was our first cruise, and we found the Viking cruise line exemplary. We spent 10 days on the cruise (including two nights in hotels) and visited 8 ports.
In Berlin and Prague we stayed in Hilton Hotels, enjoying the high standards of these hotels and the aid of exceptionally helpful Viking employees. On land and on the river, we found the cruise well run, and all the Viking people pleasant and helpful. Service in all departments was excellent. If we had to single out anyone, it would be our cabin steward, but all the Viking employees were outstanding, from the captain and the organizers onwards.
The excursions, lectures and other activities were well planned, and the guides were lively and well informed. We particularly enjoyed the Worlitz gardens at Dessau, the town of Meissen, the experience of Dresden, plus the Saxon Switzerland, Litomerice, and Prague. Viking employees were always on hand to give advice and information. On the Fontane, our cabin was comfortable and the dining experience was excellent--we appreciated the wide variety of good food available.
Overall, we greatly enjoyed the experience, so much so that we have already booked our places on another Viking river cruise next year.
