Celebrity Solstice Mediterranean Greek Isles

Sail Date: July 2011
Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean
Embarkation: Barcelona

This was our 4th cruise & our 3rd with Celebrity. We started the cruise off with a 2 day break in Barcelona which is a fantastic city. We stayed at the Majestic hotel which is in an ideal location. The major plus is the pool & bar on the top floor it's great place to savior the views with a glass of rioja. If there is one local place to eat at try Tapac 24 enjoy the experience.

Caught the taxi from the hotel to embark on the ship which went smoothly despite being overcharged for the journey.

The Stateroom was adequate & it was clean
The food was good especially in the MDR were Brad was an excellent assisted by Andre. They could not do enough for us.

Entertainment wise There could have been better use of the string quartet.

We organised all our own trips on port visits including our only organised tour that we undertook using Ephesus Tours for The Highlights of Ephesus. We found them very good.

I frequently used the gym & found it to be More good. The running track was a waste of time as it got too difficult trying to avoid fellow runners & passengers with an accident waiting to happen

Unfortunately due to unrest in Athens We had to make an unanticipated stop in Crete. This did not spoil the cruise despite missing Athens.
Disembarkation was trouble free as we elected to carry our cases off ship

Overall the staff were very helpful & made the cruise special Less

Port and Shore Excursions

We did our own trip to Capri instead of heading along the Amalfi coast & Pompeii which we have done before After docking at 7 a.m we ran to purchase jet boat tickets for the first trip of the day The jet boat ticket office is just a five minute walk from where the ship docked. A one-way ticket was 17 Euros and a 45 minute jet boat ride. Once we arrived at the dock we took the funicular up to Capri town followed by a local bus up to Anacapri. In Anacapri we took the chairlift to the top of the Mount Solaro. The views were amazing but it was an experience get the courage to get on the chair lift but it was definitely worth the effort . I recommend getting there early in the morning before it gets busy. After coming back down we walked around Anacapri & took a taxi back to Capri. Before relaxing with a well earned drink at a fantastic bar. A fantastic but very busy day.

We made an unanticipated stop in Crete at Souda due to unrest in Athens which prevented the ship docking there. We were able to travel into the historic port on a courtesy bus that was provided. It was a pleasant place

Ephesus

The highlight was a visit to Ephesus, an ancient city whose ruins . We organized our own tour through Ephesus tours which was excellent . We was also treated to a carpet demonstration, pottery display & finally a fashion show at a leather shop

Sea Plane Flight

Valleta. After catching an old London bus into the centre we walked around. On returned to the ship we elected to take the sea plane which is adjacent to the docking area for the ship. If you get chance I recommend to take the sea plane which is the best way to get a fantastic overview of the Valleta & island of Malta. Make sure you are on deck when you sail out of port

Celebrity encouraged passengers to use shuttle buses which you are charged for when it is was actually cheaper for 4 people to use the taxi to get into town! It's a great place to wander round then sit down at one of the cafes enjoy people watching We managed to take a steady stroll back to the ship.

The port for Rome is Civitavecchia which is over an hour away by train. With it being very hot we decided to stay on the ship as we had several busy days ahead of us & we had also been to Rome before . Walked around Civitavecchia which has a small promenade with a few cafe bars.

Having been tendered we took the cable car which is quick and cheap. My memory will be of the poor donkeys having to take tourists up the hill on a very warm day. I would have walked down the hill along the stairs, but was put off by smell & deposits on the walkway. Once in Santorini We just wandered around & enjoyed the fantastic views from a bar
