San Juan to NYC

Sail Date: April 2012
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: San Juan

San Juan Airport clearing customs was very slow and frustrating. We ended up on the ship about 2 hours later than expected. Once through embarkation , which was smooth we were headed into Old San Juan. Since we sailing away at 8pm we thought we had plenty of time to go out and explore. However, as we tried to leave the ship we were told we had to be back for a mandatory fire drill at 4:45. I had emailed Celebrity and also called to ask about leaving the ship after embarkation and was told no problem that we would do a make up drill. So I was VERY upset at being told to be back on ship by 4:45. I went down to Guest Services and the info I had was confirmed and off the ship we went. A second drill was called at 7:30, I am so glad I did not take no for an answer.

We had select serve dining and I had pre-booked times for each night. Almost every meal was terrific! Buffet dining was good, easy to find a place except after the half day in Tortola when everyone was coming back for More lunch at the same time. We went to Bistro Five on the stayover night in Bermuda and it was nice, good food but it never seemed busy. We did not feel the need to go to the specialty dining on this trip as the MDR was so good (normally we go to specialty dining for half the cruise nights). The last sea day there was a beautiful brunch in the MDR.

We spent some time in the Micheal's Bar and also the Aft Bar. The Martini Bar was very busy and the Wine-Cellars Bar was empty most of the time. We saw a little of most of the shows and enjoyed the comic and the female impressionist the most. As always the "newlywed" game was good fun. The band that played pool side and for the night pool parties was very good.

We enjoyed the indoor pool area (great sauna/showers). It was not difficult getting lounge chairs on this cruise.

There were two outdoor evening deck parties, they were GREAT!

Our room stewards were very good, and most waiters were good (with the exception of "Captains night".

We had a Cruise Critic meeting after Tortola. Only the Cruise Director attended and that was disappointing. The cabin crawl after the meeting was very well attended by those that signed up and the poker crawl was fun. It was very nice of C/C members to open up there rooms and we did get to see the Penthouse Suite!
I also attended a C/C wine tasting which was scheduled at the same time as the C/C slot pull. I enjoyed the wine tasting and the conversations. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Our ship was almost 2 hours late disembarking which could have put a wrench in our plans. We bought a 2 day bus/ferry pass for 20.00. Our plan was to get to the Chrystal Caves before the last tour at 4:30. WE just made it, others did not. We went to the Swizzle Inn for a pitcher of there famous punch. We headed to City Hall for the "night in the Arts" with a wonderful free art exhibit and cocktails/appetizer reception. We spent the evening at the Frog and Onion pub. We took a seat at the bar and ended up having a wonderful conversation with two local taxi drivers. Our second day in Bermuda started off cloudy. We took the bus to Somerset were we started walking up the "Railway Trail" we stopped off at Fort Scaur for wonderful views of the harbour. We continued walking down the trail and saw a wonderful "Moongate" . As a young man was getting in his car I asked him if he could take our picture. We told him we were now on our way to "Gibb's lighthouse" by bus. He told us that he had a song on MTV called "Bermuda Is" (U tube it). As he began to drive away he lowered his window and said " I will take you there". He took us right to the parking lot the lighthouse. For 2.00 we bought a ticket and walked up the many stairs to a spectacular view of the Harbour. We walked the 20 minutes to Horseshoe Beach, all the way to Warwick Long Beach. We went back to the Dockyard to wander around under clear skies and had drinks and a snack at "Bone Fish".

9/11 Memorial

(5)
Great way to end the trip and get to the airport. Had a wonderful Harbour cruise , walk around Battery Park. We had tickets for the new 9/11 Memorial and we had 30 minutes to walk around (it was enough time and enabled us more time for Wall St). Our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining.

We took a taxi from the Pan-American pier to El Morro Fort. It was a free day at the fort and there was a re-enactment which was great to see. We had a great time walking around Old San Juan. We stopped at the Convento Hotel for "happy hour" drinks.

We rented a car in advance for pick up at the pier, Coastal Rentals was very good to use. We first went to Orient Beach and took up a spot at "Orange Fever" good price. Then we went to Loterie Farm where our kids went "zip-lining" and we had a "tapis" lunch at the TreeHouse Lounge. What a great place to go. We walked up to Fort Louis in Marigot..what a view. Stopped at Serafina's bakery for wonderful croissants. Our son requested to go see the planes at Maho beach. What fun they had in the waves as the planes came in overhead. We enjoyed drinks at the Sunset bar.

We had pre-booked an excursion with Papa Bear "air force one" . After a wonderful tour he took us to Sapphire Beach. After a quick walk around Havensight we boarded the Summit.

We got of the ship early to take a walk around town. There is not much to see. We met up with our kids to take an open air taxi to Cane Garden Beach. BEAUTIFUL! We rented lounge chairs and enjoyed the beach for a few hours. We walked to the Callwood Distillery which was very interesting.
