Maasdam Cruise Review

Sail Date: April 2012
Destination: Southern Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Maasdam cruise 4/16/2012 - 4/27/2012 Southern Caribbean

DH and I had a wonderful time on this cruise. While the Maasdam is showing her age a bit (so am I :-) she remains a beautiful ship! As an added plus it was a great honor to have the opportunity to meet many cruise critic members/friends!!

Embarkation and Debarkation
Quick and seamless -- to the best of my recollection we were on board by 11:30/11:45am

The Stateroom
Our stateroom was a bit compact but clean. Balcony not so clean, but it was fine. Our room stewards were wonderful and very accommodating. Loved the balcony at the aft. There was apparent vibration and movement felt however we did not find it to be bothersome. Deck chairs being placed on deck around 6am were also heard but we like to start our day(s) early so we actually found that to be a benefit. Cabin was also a bit "squeaky."

The Staff
All of the staff members we came in contact with on the Maasdam were More wonderful, helpful and pleasant. Everyone had such a wonderful disposition and we felt they wanted to ensure our experience was a great one. They certainly accomplished that.

The Food
Dining room food and service was outstanding. I did however find that our assigned wine steward appeared to have too many tables to tend. Further, if you just want to order a glass of wine (not a bottle) it is the responsibility of the dining room steward. I personally feel they have enough to do without having to fetch wine, soda, etc....This is definitely a recognized cut back by HAL. We dined in the Pinnacle Grill two times and found both meals to be very good. Had a slight "blip" during a birthday dinner but it did not overshadow our overall experience. Also dined in The Canaletto two times and the food and the staff were just outstanding. I cannot say enough about our experience there. Another pleasant surprise was dinner in the Lido. Had dinner there once and found the atmosphere quiet, the food hot and very good. Room service was exceptional. The Grill area was fine.

Entertainment
Loved the atmosphere of the Crow's Nest!! Out of 11 cruises with HAL this was the absolute best disco/dance venue. DJ Brad rocked it out!! Best DAM DJ on the high seas!!
Ocean Bar entertainment was very nice, enjoyed the music and atmosphere before dinner. Photographers did not hound us for pictures. The shots they did take we purchased. The musical entertainment in the Showroom at Sea was absolutely fabulous. Hyperion Knight -- was amazing. Piano Man indeed - what a great, great, great performer!! The HAL singers and orchestra also put on a great show. Excellent and talented group of singers. Only a couple of dancers on this ship -- they really didn't have much room to move around though. Overall I thought all of the Maasdam entertainers did an outstanding job.
The spa services and staff were terrific. Also enjoyed the gym equipment and the exercise classes offered by Rob.

Standout Ports
St Maarten -- just aaaaaaamaaaaazing -- Thank you Captain Bob Cass and CC'er's!! The best tour ever!!!!! Will forever have and keep these incredible and precious memories!!

St Vincent -- is just such a beautiful island -- took a tour with Captain Wayne -it too was awesome -- we should have had more time there -- all aboard was at 3:30pm!!

St Croix -- also beautiful, but everything is closed around the port -- was kind of depressing....

Half Moon Cay -- still remains Heaven on Earth!!

Just one little thing....the ship left many of the ports early!! It was annoying, especially knowing the ship has the ability to move at a maximum speed of 22 knots. Half Moon Cay, we were off the ship around 9am then all aboard was 2:30pm!! I guess Captain Ane Jan Smit is not a fan of St. Vincent, St. Croix, St. Kitts or HMC...One last thing....Captain AJS apparently is not a horn blower...seldom heard the horn blow while leaving ports. I think he may need some lessons from the Captain on the Westerdam:-).

Well that's all folks -- We really had a great time and already looking forward to booking another!!! Less

Cabin review: Maasdam Verandah Suite Verandah

Our stateroom was a bit compact but clean. Balcony not so clean, but it was fine. Our room stewards were wonderful and very accommodating. Loved the balcony at the aft. There was apparent vibration and movement felt however we did not find it to be bothersome. Deck chairs being placed on deck around 6am were also heard but we like to start our day(s) early so we actually found that to be a benefit. Cabin was also a bit "squeaky." Bathroom was small - closets ok but we travel heavy. Keeping organized is a must.

Port and Shore Excursions

Walked to downtown for shopping - shopping was ok. Constant nagging by taxi drivers to take a tour with them.

Heaven on Earth!!!!!!

St Croix is absolutely beautiful. Can swim and snorkel right outside the port area. However many of the waterfront shops were closed. It appears to be becoming very depressed.

Like St. Kitts - went shopping. Not a fan of the guys with the monkeys - wish they would stop that.

Beautiful Island indeed. However, took a HAL sponsored catamaran tour to Fond Doux Estate/Plantation. It rained heavy most of the way there. There was not enough cover on the catamaran to get out of the rain. Everything was just soaked including us. They forged ahead though - felt like we were being held captive. Had "friends" come up to the catamaran selling trinkets etc...they kept yelling and hounding passengers to look at their things and buy. It was annoying. The bus to the plantation was not air-conditioned and smelled like gas as did the catamaran. Will not do that again...

Took an unforgettable private tour with Captain Bob Cass!! Highly Recommend!! See full review on St Maarten Board - Under "Bob Cass."

Took a private tour with Captain Wayne - Baleine Tours. St. Vincent is such a beautiful - beautiful island. All aboard was 3:30pm - annoyed with HAL that we did not have more time to see all this beautiful island has to offer.
