Ship Facts: Norwegian Star Review (by Cruise Critic!) | Norwegian Star Deck Plans
Family of 3 with toddler, balcony
I had fun reading the other reviews and mostly agreed with everything they said. Our cruise was very family-oriented, due to our traveling with a toddler, so families traveling with small children might appreciate our perspective....

Embarkation was good. I liked that we were allowed to go to our cabin right away and set down the carry-on bags. Very handy and allowed us to relax and unwind a little! There was some chaos with the life boat drill, but it was over fast and we could relax and enjoy ourselves afterwards.

Biggest trip high: Our cabin and steward! He gave consistent excellent service the entire cruise and our cabin was always clean and stocked. I had some of the extra smaller furniture removed to make more floor space, which worked well. The balcony was so nice to have when our son napped! And they deliver food and paid drinks to our room without extra charge! We never had to battle for deck chairs as we had our own! Worth every penny! I also liked the casino. The shows were okay. I thought the ship was in good shape and the main area was pretty.

Biggest trip low: Since we were traveling with a small child, we mostly ate out of the buffet. Interesting - They served the exact same bland food every day! I mean the meals never changed! They served the exact same food for breakfast, lunch and dinner! And if your child wants applesauce, you had better be ready to get it at high noon, because they will not vary that meal schedule, no matter how nicely you ask or who you ask! They are also stingy in the drink area. You had better like water, milk, or coffee, because you will not get any other beverage unless it is breakfast! Even if you have a soda sticker! If you want soda, be prepared to get up, go out to the bar area, and wait in line. Another interesting buffet habit - They greet you with a spray bottle of antiseptic and spray you like you have bugs! Very low-brow cafeteria.

PORTS...

Roatan tip - Spend the extra money and buy an excursion. There is nothing to do or see there unless you do. The locals WILL harass you if you are out of the port area and not part of an excursion. It is very dirty, very rundown, very unsafe. People who bought excursions seemed to have had a better experience. We ended up just spending time back on the ship as there was nothing for us to do.

Belize tip - The shopping is great! Counterfeit bags/shoes/sunglasses galore! Most seem to run about $30 and look nice. Good selection of items you will actually want to own once you get home!

Costa Maya - Beautiful port. They know how to treat their tourists and do it well! Bring your swimsuit and enjoy the swimming pools. Live dancers come by and do shows every hour. Shopping is your standard fare. Use this port to relax!

Parent tips:

1.) The Kid Zone seemed to be full of kids this trip. If your child will not wait in a line without a meltdown or escape attempt, do not go when it opens as checking in your child is SLOW!! Also good to know... The Kid Zone will not watch your child if they are in diapers and you want to go on an excursion at a port. One of you will have to remain on board ship. This was never explained to us when we booked, and really limited what we could do. When you are sailing, they will watch your child but you will have to carry a pager. Not a bad deal, overall, and made it so that we could do a few things alone as a couple while sailing.

2.) Norweigian has a kid pool area on the back of the ship that is very nice and is maintained well. The pools are shallow enough so that your child can play safely. We spent a lot of time there.

3.) There is a kids food buffet, but it is always pizza, chicken nuggets, or starchy fast foods kids need to chew well. If your child needs softer foods or has special diet needs, plan to pack your own. Bleh!

4.) Grab the milk cartons when they are out for meals and stock up in your cabin minifridge, so you will have milk on hand when you need it, as they do not have milk out any other time except meals.

5.) An umbrella stroller is the way to go!

Overall review: This is a good cruise line for people wanting to relax. Not a party ship at all. Energy level was low-key, family-friendly. Bar service is minimal. They do not try to sell you drinks. Activities are few and stop after 1030. No nightlife at all. I caught up on my reading and sleep!

Disembarking went well. We got our luggage and got to our plane without issue.
