Just Like We Remembered!

Sail Date: April 2012
Destination: Southern Caribbean
Embarkation: San Juan

It had been several years since sailing on Celebrity. We have used several other cruise lines based on price and destination.

We boarded the Summit in San Juan. We got to the port at about 12:30 and were on the ship by 12:50. Very easy embarkation! Room not ready yet, so we made our way to the buffet for lunch. The food was very good, although I have had better variety on other ships.

It was our first time on the Summit, so we wandered on our own for a bit of exploring. The Summit is a bit smaller ship than what we have been on lately, and it was nice to be able get around to everything so quickly.

We ate all of our dinners in the main dining room. We had select dining and requested 6:00 pm dining for 2 every night. The dining room opened at 5:45, and we always requested and received the same table by the window. Nice to have the same staff as set-time dining with a bit more freedom. We had considered eating in one of the specialty restaurants, but the food More was so good in the Cosmopolitan that we stayed there! With the port-intensive itinerary, we ate very small lunches in the early to mid-afternoon. Sometimes at the buffet and sometimes just by the pool. The burgers and fries by the pool were great! DH loved the ship-made ice cream!

We did not attend all of the shows as we generally go to bed early. We did enjoy the ventriloquist Patrick Murray.

We found the spa area to be very peaceful and relaxing. The Thalassotherapy pool was great! We were able to to use any of gym equipment between 6:00 and 6:30 am without a problem.

Our room was very clean and average size for an ocean view. We were surprised by the size of the shower! A nice rectangular size rather than the cylinder we are used to!

All of the staff was very friendly. We had no need to use the client relations desk except for changing money and had no issues there.

We did not book any shore excursions through Celebrity.

Disembarkation went very smoothly and we were to the airport by 8:15am.(With the help of a crazy cab driver!!) Less

Cabin review: Celebrity Summit Oceanview Stateroom Vista Deck (7) 2001

Room 2001. Average size. Shower in the bathroom was very nice! The drawers for our clothing were directly across from the bathroom door, so always had to be careful not to make a quick exit from the bathroom. Not a lot of shelf space but there were a lot of drawers. Only 2 shelves in bathroom for vanity items. Not a lot of areas to hang damp swimsuits for drying. Very clean room!!

Port and Shore Excursions

We had booked a tour with Gordon, but opted to go with another tour. (Long story) We went to Nelson's Dockyard, Shirley Heights, and the Blockhouse. Had planned to do the Stingray City swim, but DH came down with a migraine, so we went back to the ship instead. Had a nice drive around the island, but not terribly impressed. Nice to see once, but will not be in a hurry to go back to this island.

We hired a cab to take us on an island tour. We saw the west shore area on the way to the Barbados Wildlife Park. We thoroughly enjoyed the park! If you are looking for the green monkey, it is best to go after 3:00pm when they come back to the park. They are free to come and go, so they usually leave the park for other areas during the day and come back later. We also saw mara, tortoises, iguanas and deer. A nice diversion from the norm! We then travelled to the east side of the island to Bathsheba. Beautiful area with a nice breeze. On the way back to the port, we stopped at a few churches. Nice 4 hour tour. Then a bit of shopping by the pier.

Hired a private tour with Cosol. Concerned about the winding roads and motion sickness, so figured we should play it safe and not involve anybody else! I took 2 Bonine and had no problems at all. What a great tour! We had Swabie as our guide and he was very informative. Went to the walk-in volcano, Pitons, several scenic overviews, banana plantation, and tried some local cuisine. A full day, but worth every minute. We did the entire trip by land rather than taking a boat back to the port. Next time might try the boat just for something different. Swabie was great about taking our photos and answering all of our questions. Would use them again in a heartbeat!

Had been here before, but not to Marigot. We did not like the itinerary for the island tours, so we took a cab to Marigot and walked around. Discovered Fort Louis and had a nice trek to the top. Beautiful view from up there! Nice breeze on a hot sunny day. Decided to have a mango smoothie before heading over to Maho to watch the planes come in. Got to Maho at 1:00pm. Ordered a pizza at the Sunset Bar (Great pizza at a great price!) Watched the people and the planes until 2:30, then back to the port. Went to the Chocolate Box for a few goodies. (The fudge is not like what we get at home. I would pass on that the next time.) The chocolates are pricey but good! Walked back to the port and got a coconut drink (nummy!!) before boarding the ship.

Been here before. Just walked around town for a bit of shopping. Then back to the ship for a relaxing afternoon as the rest of the cruise had been quite busy.
