We sailed out of Ft. Lauderdale on Equinox, April 6th, 2012. As usual boarding with Celebrity was a breeze. It was no more than 15 minutes from dropping our baggage with the attendants to our "Welcome Aboard" champagne. Disembarking was the same, quick and efficient.
We had a 1A Stateroom with Veranda on Deck 8 and it was everything we expected. Our previous cruise was to Alaska in 2009 on Mercury and this was definitely a step up. The room was the same size, but with nice appointments,a much larger deck, a glass enclosed shower and lots of storage space.
We skipped one of the evening shows; it was a female comedienne who came with a "not for children" label for the regular scheduled evening shows. It was not something we cared for. Another entertainer, billed as an "Impersonator/comedienne" was on one evening. She impersonated some and honored others, but she didn't tell us which she was doing. Many people just walked out. The remainder of the shows were top notch and we were suitably impressed.
We had chosen traditional dining at the later seating (8:30 pm) and we really enjoyed it. The dining room food was very good with the exception of the steaks. At our table we had three incidences where the steaks were nearly raw when "med-rare" had been ordered. The restaurant manager and the Chef visited our table and were concerned that my wife was not pleased. She loved the taste of the two steaks she sent back and was disappointed that she could not eat them. After the third time, it was realized that what we ordered as "medium rare" was what we got according to the Chef, but what we really wanted was "medium." Once that was clarified, the Chef offered to cook the next steak personally should my wife order another. She did on the last night and it was larger than normal, but my wife raved about it; it was done just right and it tasted just like it should. I must add that whilst my wife's and one other lady's steaks were usually too rare, there were a number of others at the table who raved about how wonderful theirs were. Clearly, it was a misunderstanding. Although it was somewhat frustrating, I must complement the Restaurant Manager and the Chef for their continued desire to resolve the issue and to see that we were pleased with the cuisine, etc. In some reviews I had read before our cruise, the issue of tough steaks, etc was mentioned, but it would seem that the quality is no longer an issue and the service in the Dining Room, as regards the customer's expectations, remains very high.
In other reviews, there was frequent mention of Equinox having only one main bank of elevators which produced a lot of waiting. That simply was not our experience even on the five days of excursions.etc.
Equinox is a fabulous ship and despite the few issues above, our cruise was a great one. We are planning our next one and it will be with Celebrity. There is no other cruise line for us.
