First Cruise Ever

Sail Date: March 2011
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Tampa

Our family went on our first cruise this year. We selected the Star based on the timing of spring break and the ports. We were excited about Honduras and Belize. We enjoyed each stop, but did learn things along the way.

First, consider the start time each excursion you are signing up for! We were traveling with teens and would have liked to start our tours later in the day. We all needed more sleep.

Second, do not book anything over 4 hours that includes bus, boat and lots of travel time. We went on an excursion to the Mayan Ruins at Lamanai. Nice idea, but it required 1 1/2 hours by bus, 1 hour by boat just to get there!

Third, the selection of an upgraded room was well worth it! We stayed in a two bedroom family suite and were happy with the layout, amount of space, the butler services and the perks. We hung out in our room as a family much more than we anticipated. It was very comfortable, in fact the bed in the room was better than our bed at More home!!!

Great staff on board and the ship was clean. The dining was our only disappointment. The food was just ok. It did not meet our expectations. We tried 5 of the dining options that were not included in the complimentary dining as we wanted decent food. The food often was served cold or not the correct temperature. Our favorite meals were at the Teppanyaki and Tex-Mex dining options. The main dining rooms were ok, but the waits were longer than we hoped and the food moderate. We will cruise again, just not sure we would go on the same ship or cruise line. We will likely choose based on the ports! Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Star 11050

11050 Great Two Bedroom Family Suite that was very comfortable for our family. The living room and dining areas were quite large and the balcany with lounge chairs were like an extra living space. Bed in master was better than our bed at home!

Port and Shore Excursions

We picked the wrong excursion. Lamanai Ruins was nice. The ride there required 1 1/2 hours by bus, 1 hour by boat EACH way. Our tour guide was Wilifred or something like that. He talked non stop the entire time. We did not get much time to explore the ruins as he was always talking and lecturing about the history. We expected some of that but it was too much. I would not select this excursion based on the travel time. Choose fishing, snorkeling or a beach. Everyone that did, was happy when they got back to the boat.

Dolphin Swim

(5.5)
Excellent experience! Our advice would be to take a later time. The crowds from the ships in the morning flood the dolphin center to capacity. In the afternoon, no one was swimming with the dolphins. I bet you will have more one on one time later in the day.

Submarine Tour

(5.5)
The sub was incredible. All 5 of us thought it surpassed our expectations. It is roomy, and much more comfortable than expected. The view is amazing! The kids and adults loved it.

Great port! Loved the Gumbalymba Park and the Tabayana beach. The best beach in relation to water clarity, sand and surroundings I have ever experienced!
