Great Experience by mcriss50

Fantastic. We loved the size of the room & balcony. Having all the closet space & drawer space you could possibly need was great. The separate dressing area was a nice addition. The room was so clean, the bed very comfortable king size.

We had booked a BB verandah suite guarantee cabin and about 10 days before our cruise we were assigned an A verandah suite---065. We were a little concerned about the location--the last one on the Navigation deck. I saw that there was a bar on the other side of our room on the Seaview Pool deck and we were on the side where smoking was allowed. What I couldn't see from the deck plan on the HAL site is that there is also a large storage area by the bar and that was probably directly next to our room and verandah. We never heard anything from the side of our room. We did hear chairs being moved around for about 5 minutes most mornings, but it really wasn't loud enough or long enough to bother us. I've also read that some people on our deck could hear the basketball court on the 12 floor, but we were far enough away that we never heard that (except when we were in the Lido restaurant late at night and it was LOUD)! Our cabin and the cabin next to ours were not covered by the Lido restaurant overhang. We liked that, although I've read where some people liked the overhang. We liked the wide open views of sunset. The verandah was rather small for a suite, but it was very private. We also ended up really liking the location being so close to the elevators and Seaview Pool. We also liked being so close to the stairs to take them up to the Lido restaurant. Our cabin steward was great. The only thing that did perplex me was that the category of that room was being changed from an A to a BC shortly after our cruise. We really liked the location of this room and wouldn't hesitate to book it again.

Marvelous Maritimes by Sailin'Showman
Our cabin 144 on Verandah (Deck 9) was about 200 cubic feet with a very generous balcony. We had very little noise, and good storage spaces. Water pressure was a bit low, but they had some plumbing problems.  Read entire member review.

Cabin 161 was adequate for 2 people but I was unhappy with the sq. footage. The bath was a bath/whirlpool combination which meant the sides were rather high, as a result, difficult to get into. A friend of mine in a Neptune Suite, about 2 times larger than a Verandah suite, noticed the problem with the bath. But there was plenty of closet space.

Center of ship not too bad for people who get sea sick but requires a hike to elevators. The balcony is always a nice addition. The Maasdam is an older ship and the tub/shower combo shows it's age. My 87 year old mother shared a cabin with me and I was concerned she would slip or fall getting in and out of the shower because it has high sides and it is quiet a step up or out. Ask for a rubber mat for the shower to prevent a fall if you don't have good balance.
My family of five members do not drink alcoholic beverages, participate in art auction charades, or gamble, or buy those pictures taken at the gangways. We usually get massages and take shore excursions. The on-board bill for seven days was approximately $1800.
I have been a big HAL fan for my Mediterranean, New Zealand, Panama Canal, Caribbean cruises, but the disappointment of poor value for several shore excursions and early port departures has encouraged my family to book with another cruise line that offers a one price plan that includes the shore excursions.

Great cabin (205).
Quiet, clean, extra large balcony, plus easy access to back deck which is always empty.

Lots of storage, refrigerator, great balcony and loved the bathtub!  Next to last cabin aft so pretty quiet back there!  Great aft deck to enjoy that not many people found and just a few steps from the cabin. Only 1 electrical outlet as usual.  Read entire member review.

room had a queen size bed lots of closets and a 4 piece bathroom ( no fan )
small TV and a wee desk.
Our unobstructed view balcony was a non opening window with people walking by at all hours and a spot light directly outside ( curtains had to be drawn shut at all times )

Lanai cabin 358 is in the center of deck 6, perfect location. Everything in the cabin works, and the closets are large and include drawer space as well as plenty of room to hang clothes. There is no refrigerator in these cabins, and they are a bit smaller than a balcony cabin. The reserved padded lounge chairs right outside of the cabin are a plus though.

Once problem area is the tub and shower. The water is hard to control, the hot is very hot, and the knobs are quirky. Turn on and set the water on before getting in. Someone bought the wrong size shower curtain, it drags on the floor of the tub. I tried folding it up, but that just got water got all over the floor. Both of these are safety hazards. It would be a quick fix with a pair of scissors and a sewing machine. The tub is also set very high, which could be a problem for some people.

Love being able to step out of our cabin on to the lower promenade and the reserved deck chairs.

It was an obstructed view, and we were happy with it.

Felt a lot of motion, noisy when docking.  Read entire member review.

Best air-conditioning in a room EVER! Room was spacious for 2, plenty of storage. Tub and shower. Elemis shower gel, shampoo and conditioner in shower dispensers. Elemis lotion in bathroom.

The cabin was very nice. It contained a full size sofa and a rather roomy bathroom by cruise ship standards.

Right in the middle, 2 twin or 1 queen, and a sofa (bed?), countertop table, a room service table. Very quiet, not much sea rocking, easy to get to and from the departure ramps and any other part of the ship. Shower stall, no tub, but never felt cramped.

Cabin was very nice and had lots of cupboard space. Lot of ship noise when coming into the port so if you like to sleep in you'll definitely be woken up.

It is important to note that the stateroom categories are different on Cruise Critic than on the HAL web site. This is an early version of the deck plan, which was likely updated after the 2011 refit. If you just go by the stateroom number itself you will know which stateroom the reviewers are referring to, as the numbers do not repeat on the Maasdam. Our stateroom was formerly known as E688 and is now labeled DD688, which is not a partially obstructed view stateroom.

This outside stateroom was bigger than some I have had on other lines. It was nicely furnished with a full-sized sofa that will make a bed, a pull down upper berth, another occasional chair and a vanity chair. With three traveling, we chose to use the upper berth for the third traveler so that the sitting are could be used by us earlier risers.

Bathroom was nicely furnished with granite counter tops and a tub. Linens were clean and nice. Big bath-sized towels and complimentary robes were provided. Elemis products were provided for your every need.

Nice assortment of standard in-room literature, which was very informative. Stationary and envelopes were provided. Everything you need to know about the ship and room service was nicely presented.

One closet door had two hinges, which had come loose. This was reported on day one of the cruise and it fell off completely on day three of the cruise. It was promptly fixed when I reported that it had fallen off. One small drawer with a broken track in the bedside table never was fixed. There is plenty of storage in this stateroom for three travelers, even without this drawer.

Ventilation was not the best, as not much air seemed to come out of the vent at all. I cannot say that it was ever that hot or cold. The thermostat seemed to do little if anything. Not a bad stateroom, just a few minor glitches.

Lots of closet space. One bed comes down from the ceiling, another bed appears out of the sofa. Pretty tight for four adults, but not bad with two little kids. Very close to the elevators and to the gangway for the ports (which is good because the elevators get really busy). Far enough from the stairway that noise is not a problem.  Read entire member review.

842 was noisy! Above the engine "thrusters" as we found out when we were woken up by the incredibly loud engine noise at 3:30 am on our fist night. Loud and caused so much vibration the whole cabin was shaking. Impossible to sleep. Terrible. Others in our group in same area (832, 834) also woken up every time the "thrusters" used - and they were used every night or morning to dock the ship. Awful. Very dirty window too.

Verandah Suite: lots of closet and drawer space, quiet, comfortable bed, jetted tub.  Read entire member review.
Criticism! your list of ports did not include some of ours. Charlottetown, PEI or Sydney, NS!! Charlottetown was great and should be available for comment.  Read entire member review.

Thank Heavens for HAL by ladybonnieboots
Cabin was well used and pretty worn out. Big black spot on vanity mirror. Lamp was very loose in the fitting. Water was brown one morning. Shower drained very slowly. Some type of bugs in the bed.  Read entire member review.
