Each week, we choose five cruise reviews written by our members, one of which is showcased as the Member Review of the Week. In the spotlight this week is Cruise Critic member bassspanker‘s recent cruise to the Mexican Riviera aboard Carnival Imagination.
Overall Impression: Unlike most cruisers, bassspanker and his family found peace in some of the noisiest cabins on the ship (more on this later). While the ship itself seemed a bit gaudy and dated, that didn’t put a damper on their experience; despite being a short cruise, there were a few pleasant surprises.
Onboard Highlight: Adjoining porthole cabins in the mechanical area of the ship helped bassspanker and his wife keep the kids busy with a room to themselves – the porthole windows and unfamiliar ship noises spiked their curiosity.
Port Highlight: Having traveled to Ensenada for work quite a bit, bassspanker had a good feel for the area and knew the perfect local spots to escape the tourist crowds. Among them was Birrieria Guadalajara, an authentic Mexican eatery with a succulent lamb dish.
Don’t Miss: The live band, The Regulators, which bassspanker — who naturally has a discerning opinion, working in the music industry — believes ‘nailed’ it.
Watch Out For: Bassspanker and his family opted for My Time Dining and found that when you show up to the dining room involves more strategy than one might think, especially on a short cruise. Rushes tend to occur just as the doors open and of course, right around production shows. Be careful not to show up too long after the doors open. You’ll be twirling your thumbs until the first group of diners finishes up.
More: Read bassspanker’s full review for more tips to keep in mind onboard and off, plus details about Camp Carnival for fellow parents.
For their efforts, bassspanker and four other Reviewers of the Week — andmad, Psycopuppy, SarahCuda, and akchang — receive Cruise Critic logo items.
