Steal of the Week: Save on a Cruise to Antarctica

May 1, 2014 | By | No Comments

Everyone is looking for the deal of the century. So how do you choose the one that’s right for you? Check the Lido Deck each week to get the scoop on our favorite deals — then grab the phone and pack your bags.
THE DEAL: Hurtigruten is offering 30 percent savings on cruises to Antarctica during a special five-day sale ending on May 3.
WHAT WE LOVE: It is quite rare to see such savings offered on Antarctica cruises, which tops many bucket lists as the ultimate distant, exotic destination. A cruise to Antarctica is arguably the best way to see our seventh continent, and it offers a glimpse into an environment few people manage to see: a stark yet strikingly beautiful frozen tundra. Hurtigruten is a line well-accustomed to cold-weather climates; it regularly sails through Norwegian waters, even during wintertime. Your voyage offerings range from penguin-watching to tracing the steps of past explorers, so you can customize this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Atypical for a cruise sale, Hurtigruten is even including a holiday sailing during Christmas as part of this promotion.
WHAT GIVES US PAUSE: Just a short few days is probably not enough time for people to plan out such a major trip, but if you had a cruise to Antarctica already in mind or are feeling adventurous, this deal is a great opportunity to save. Hurtigruten is not a luxury line, so expect accommodations accordingly. You’ll be going for the sights and the experience, and less for the onboard atmosphere. Understandable for such a trek, 13 days is the shortest sailing offered. If you’re low on time, consider saving Antarctica for when you can savor it.
