Cruise Critic staffers set sail every week, traveling the globe to bring you the latest cruise ship trends, port sneak peeks and onboard observations. Here’s where we are this week.
(Got questions about any of the ships we’re boarding? Ask us in the comments!)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway
Where: Southampton (and, possibly, the Isle of Wight).
Who: Adam Coulter, UK Editor, Jamey Bergman, UK Production Editor
Why There? It’s the official reveal of Norwegian’s newest ship in the UK, before it heads off across the Atlantic to its homeport of Miami. You’ll be able to ask us questions in real time on our live Getaway chat.
We Can’t Wait: We loved sister ship Breakaway – the Plank, the Boardwalk, the dining – and we want to see how Getaway has been tweaked; what’s new onboard (The Illusionarium; Legally Blonde) and how they’ve given it a Miami look and feel!
Ship: Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam
Where: Western Caribbean, including Key West, Half Moon Cay, Cozumel and Grand Cayman.
Who: Gina Kramer, Associate Editor
First Thoughts: It’s nearly a day into my Dancing With the Stars Championship cruise aboard Nieuw Amsterdam. The competitions have yet to begin, and I already feel an immense amount of energy throughout the ship. This isn’t your typical Holland America cruise, which tends to draw more of a relaxed mature crowd. On this seven-nighter, passengers are a mix of seasoned Holland America cruisers, fans of the show and those simply passionate about dancing.
Where the Action Is: Northern Lights nightclub, which is typically quiet on late nights during regular sailings, turns into a scene from Dirty Dancing (well, maybe not so dirty) that last through the wee hours of the morning. On last week’s cruise, some of the pro dancers and celebrities ended their nights at the club. I’ll be spending mine there, too, taking notes on moves that I can practice later in the week. I’ll try not to faint if I bump into Derek.
