Countdown to Launch: Norwegian Getaway

January 10, 2014 | By | 2 Comments

It’s nearly time.
Next week will be the first chance the public gets onboard to see Norwegian Cruise Lines‘ latest ship,Norwegian Getaway. After a handful of inaugural events in Europe, Getaway will make its way via New York and Super Bowl XLVIII (where it will double as a beer-themed hotel) to its homeport in Miami.
We’ll be onboard next week for a short cruise out of Southampton, and we’ll be live tweeting and answering your questions about the ship.

Although Getaway is the sister ship to last-year’s new kid on the NCL block, Norwegian Breakaway, and the two are very similar, Getaway does, ahem, break away from its elder sibling with some new-to-cruise offerings:
The Illusionarium. The brand-new Illusionarium is a special effects-laden magic show said by the line to be “inspired by the science fiction of Jules Verne, the artistry of magicians such as Houdini and the popularity of recent blockbusters featuring supernatural characters.” Visual effects from a 30-foot-wide video dome overhead will anchor the performances. The Illusionarium will host 12 performances per cruise, two shows per night.
Grammy Experience. Also new onboard is this venue featuring live performances by past Grammy winners and nominees, among others.
Like sister ship Breakaway, Getaway will offer a slew of alternative dining options, including a seafood venue created by celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian and a number of bars and eateries inspired by its homeport, Miami.  The ship will also boast an array of cabin options including The Haven by Norwegian, a top-ship, 42-suite enclave; the Studio cabins, single occupancy accommodations that debuted on Norwegian Epic; and special cabins and suites positioned around the spa.
Other offerings include a fireworks display staged on every cruise; an Aqua Park with five water slides; an adults-only deck space that transforms into an al fresco club at night; a three-story sports complex with ropes course; and The Waterfront, a quarter-mile-long outdoor “boardwalk” with eight al fresco dining venues and lounges, which connects to 678 Ocean Place, a stretched-out (instead of up), three-deck atrium running the length of the ship.

Cruising on the Getaway 2/12. So excited to be
On this new ship! Is the play “Legally Blonde'”
      Being performed? What entertainment venues
Will be available? Looking forward to exploring
And comparing to the Epic. We sailed in Epic
last February and were not pleased with the layout.
Specifically the elevators did not go to all floors
and unable to take the escalator to a favorite
dining venue, we had to go down to one floor, walk
clear across the ship to another elevator in order
to get to the desired floor.

I sailed on the maiden crossing of the Breakaway,(Southampton to NYC.) I had a beautiful balcony cabin and had a great trip. Bon voyage to everyone sailing on the Getaway!
