Where in the World is Cruise Critic?

January 6, 2014 | By | 2 Comments

Cruise Critic staffers set sail every week, traveling the globe to bring you the latest cruise ship trends, port sneak peeks and onboard observations. Here’s where we are this week.
(Got questions about any of the ships we’re boarding? Ask us in the comments!)
Ship: Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam
Where: Western Caribbean, including Key West, Half Moon Cay, Cozumel and Grand Cayman.
Who: Gina Kramer, Associate Editor
Why There? Holland America’s Dancing with the Stars cruises are the most popular at sea – and I’ll be onboard for the Championship cruise, where celebrities and professional dancers from the show join passenger finalists in a dance-off for the mirror ball trophy. I’ll be covering this exciting event with live updates and a blog to come, plus updating our Nieuw Amsterdam ship review.
We Can’t Wait: Theme cruising is growing in interest (in fact, we predict to see a lot more of them in 2014.) Besides the dance lessons, I’m excited to see stars like award-winning dancer David Hough and former ‘N Sync bandmate Joey Fatone — someone that makes this ’90s girl giddy!

I’m anxious to hear about the finals. I was on the Noordam November 15 cruise. The young woman who danced the jive and won the DWTS competition was amazing. I’d like to think she made the final cut. (I was pleased to come in third as the waltz finalist.)

I have noticed from previous passengers on the Nieuw Amsterdam that they felt this ship seemed of lessor quality build than other HAL ships. Comments saying it “looks cheap” compared to other Hal ships. My wife and I are looking at a fall med and t/a cruise but we don’t like that the ship seems cheap..What are your thoughts?
