Steal of the Week: 11-Night Quantum of the Seas Sailing from $1,349

July 25, 2013 | By | 1 Comment

Everyone is looking for the deal of the century. So how do you choose the one that’s right for you? Check the Lido Deck each week to get the scoop on our favorite deals — then grab the phone and pack your bags.
THE DEAL: The Cruise Web is offering an 11-night Southern Caribbean cruise onboard Royal Caribbean International‘s Quantum of the Seas, sailing roundtrip from Cape Liberty on December 1, 2014. Prices start from $1,349 per person for an inside cabin, which feature floor-to-ceiling virtual balconies — the first of their kind. Quantum launches in November 2014, making this one of its first few sailings.

WHAT WE LOVE: Seize the chance to snag an advance booking deal on next year’s debut of Quantum of the Seas. Port and sea days are split, featuring a variety of calls in the Southern Caribbean (including the lesser-visited island of Martinique, perfect for any Francophile). Your time at sea will most likely be spent trying to decide between  dazzling new whirligigs and doodads located throughout the ship — from Seaplex, the largest sports and entertainment venue at sea, to Two70, a gourmet marketplace and event space complete with an ice bar, state-of-the-art audiovisual elements and a top-to-bottom view. There is a near-guarantee that you won’t be bored at any point during this 12-day sailing. The industry’s first virtual balconies will make you feel like you’re never truly “inside.”
WHAT GIVES US PAUSE: During an early sailing for any new ship, not all of the kinks may be worked out just yet. With many new features and an eager following, Royal’s trademark “firsts at sea” may come with a long wait or unexpected hold-ups at attractions such as iFly or North Star. These hesitations are hypothetical, but worth considering when boarding a brand-new ship with big expectations.

Yes, you make a good point – if you are going on this ship specifically for the new features, wait until a later sailing in case of problems. We took the first sailing of the Carnival Sunshine after the refurb and chose it because of the Waterworks etc for the grandchildren – we ended up with no Waterworks til the last two days of cruise and no pool for the kids at all, amongst other issues and it caused a great deal of anger and disappointment.
