On June 10 and 11, Celebrity Cruises brought a surprise to New Yorkers rushing through Grand Central Station’s Vanderbilt Hall — a lush, green lawn.
Complete with a jazz band, lawn chairs set up under white canopies and men in suits handing out lemonade and iced tea, the grassy oasis was meant to offer a taste of what Celebrity Cruises calls The Lawn Club Experience.

Sure, cruise fans know and love The Lawn Club, featured on Celebrity’s five Solstice Class ships. Onboard each ship, The Lawn Club comprises a half-acre of real grass on the top deck. On Silhouette and Reflection, the two newest ship s in the class, the space has rentable alcoves with seating under white canopies that come with amenities such as butler service. They also have giant Adirondack chairs for photo-ops, live music and grilling stations where vacationers can create and take home spice rubs for red meat, fish or poultry. On all five ships, passengers can play croquet and enjoy space for simply stretching out and relaxing or enjoying a picnic in the sun while listening to live music.
But Celebrity wanted to share the love of the lawn with New Yorkers, giving them a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of Grand Central Station to enjoy the slower pace of life on the lawn. Passersby seemed to appreciate the respite. Many stopped by the front desk to learn more about Celebrity’s offers. Others played croquet, sipped lemonade at one of the tables set up or flipped through magazines in lawn chairs under a white canopy as busy commuters rushed by.
The replica was set up in Grand Central Station in conjunction with a two-day sales event. Those who participated in the activities set up on The Lawn Club replica could also enter two win a trip for two to Bermuda.
According Pasternak, The Lawn Club is a unique experience to Celebrity.
“It’s real grass. I don’t think any other cruise ships have their own groundskeepers,” she said, adding, “It’s kind of nice to feel like you’re in the park when you’re in the middle of the ocean.”
