They say once you go “more than a week,” you never go back. This proved true for member DarinPike12, whose first 11-night cruise aboard Norwegian Sun was just enough time for him and his family to soak up the Southern Caribbean rays.
Aboard the ship, freestyle dining — although the quality of food wasn’t as up-to-par as they’d hoped — allowed them to come and go, add variety and dress as they pleased. Though, with the celebration of his 10th anniversary, he and his wife decided to splurge on the optional formal nights.
Enjoying the freedom they had onboard, DarinPike12 arranged his own activities on land, instead of going through the ship. “Freestyle” lounging, shopping and some adventure on the side made for a great way to explore each port.
Unless you’re romancing some stones, Cartagena’s shopping scene — or lack thereof — didn’t compare to St. Maarten’s, where you can stock up on souvenirs, then take a water taxi back to the ship and unload before heading to the beach. Curacao offered some nice hidden bargains, and in Aruba, saving money came easy, as a nearby resort supplied beach chairs in exchange for multiple rounds of umbrella drinks.
A favorite on the itinerary and perfect complement to the anniversary celebration, St. Thomas was just as unforgettable as it was on DarinPike12’s honeymoon. His words of advice: “Great shopping, great beaches, great snorkeling, great sailing…good luck fitting it all in.”
