Super Bowl Predictions From 5 Cruise Line Execs

It’s one of cruising’s best U.S. homeports — so we’re picking New Orleans to win Super Bowl XLVII. But since no sportsbook would entertain such a bet, Cruise Critic reached out to top execs from Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Cunard, Holland America and Oceania Cruises for their prognostications.
Adam Goldstein, Royal Caribbean’s president and CEO: Baltimore 27, San Francisco 24. “Once low-seeded playoff teams start stringing together road wins,” says Goldstein, “they are very tough to derail; plus, Baltimore is a tough battle-tested team that must love being the underdog.”
Frank Del Rio, chairman & CEO of Prestige Cruise Holdings (Oceania Cruises & Regent Seven Seas Cruises): Looking into his crystal ball, Del Rio foresees a 20 – 16 Ravens win.
Peter Shanks, Cunard’s president & managing director: “I’m concentrating on Saturday’s England vs. Scotland rugby match — and as a Scot, I’m rooting for the underdogs, Scotland. As for the Superbowl … with Queen Victoria calling in San Francisco on Sunday as part of her world voyage, it’s the 49ers all the way!”
Stein Kruse, President and CEO of Holland America Line: According to Kruse, San Francisco will win 28 – 14. Why? “Because they’re on the West Coast and the best team in the NFC not named Seattle Seahawks.” (Holland American is based in Seattle.)
Gerry Cahill, Carnival’s president and CEO: Cahill predicts the Ravens will win by 3. “I picked the Ravens since I’m a University of Miami alum,” he says, “and Ray Lewis went there as well.” (While Cahill obliged us with a pick, the line he runs isn’t playing favorites. Carnival will offer signature cocktails — one red and one purple — for both teams.)
We’re onboard Jewel of the Seas as part of an ESPN@Sea theme cruise. Stay tuned to the Lido Deck for a glimpse of what it’s like to sail and talk football with former NFL players.
