Video: Cruise Into the Past

If you long for the days of cruising in sweaters and ties, fancy hat contests and skeet shooting off the back of the ship – or if you think those things are a hoot — check out this two-part video series about life onboard the Italian Line’s SS Leonardo da Vinci (1960). The videos, filmed in 1967, show the adventures of three boys sent off on their own (!!!) to cruise from New York to Genoa. They manage to get access everywhere – the bridge (complete with sextants), the crew mess, even the onboard
print shop. While you’ll marvel at how things have changed in a half-century, some things remain the same: The boys complain about their tablemates (ew, adults, no fun!) and are most excited about the slide at the swimming pool.
Watch dozens of other cruise videos, including the coolest cruise passenger and a self-leveling pool table.

I was turned away twice for wearing sandals and a tank top during dinner time but, it’s ok for females. On both occasions it was regular wear nothing formal. Why? Also starting with Domonic some of crew need customer service training. They need to learn how to speak to customers without showing aggression on their face when requesting a simple boat card. As a first time customer and a adult we are trying to learn your rules so, we can move forward and decide on a return trip!

We were on a cruise on the Song of Norway in 1980 for our honeymoon and my husband was in a tie for first place in the skeet shooting off the back of the ship it took 99 shots for him to finally miss one and his oponent ended up winning…..had so much fun….

Very cool. I love the way the boys are dressed up and so polite. Take three boys that age today and good luck!
I was lucky enough to cruise around west Africa in 1972 on the SS Nevassa – a school cruise. I was 13 and it was over Christmas – didn’t phase me one bit!

At the end one of the boys says “We will never get to take a trip like this again.” So how did they get back to New York?
