If you long for the days of cruising in sweaters and ties, fancy hat contests and skeet shooting off the back of the ship – or if you think those things are a hoot — check out this two-part video series about life onboard the Italian Line’s SS Leonardo da Vinci (1960). The videos, filmed in 1967, show the adventures of three boys sent off on their own (!!!) to cruise from New York to Genoa. They manage to get access everywhere – the bridge (complete with sextants), the crew mess, even the onboard print shop. While you’ll marvel at how things have changed in a half-century, some things remain the same: The boys complain about their tablemates (ew, adults, no fun!) and are most excited about the slide at the swimming pool.
