Those parents among us understand Norwegian Cruise Line’s predicament: Tell people the name of the bundle of joy you’re expecting and everyone’s a critic. This phenomenon is amplified when you ask for input, as Norwegian did recently with its Project Breakaway ships set to debut in 2013 and 2014. Although cruisers sent in the possibilities, a team at Norwegian selected the winners — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway (the also-rans: Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Journey and Norwegian Escape).
Even before the choices were revealed, Rajones007 offered a fun marketing plan on our boards. “Of the five to choose from, I would choose Journey. Then they can use ‘Any Way you Want It’ for marketing their Freestyle Cruising.” Love it, Rajones007; we’re humming along already.
Fans on our Facebook page also chimed in. Said Monika Stokes: “What’s wrong with Bliss, Escape or Journey?” Wendy Martinoni agreed, to a point. “Escape or Journey would be my vote. Bliss sounds too erotic.”
Gary Wallis pointed out a potential problem on our Facebook page. “Breakaway! Good grief! That’s a chocolate biscuit [cookie] in U.K.! Surely they could have done better.” MaryBeth Perini expressed her desire for a name that rolled off the tongue with more ease. “I just think shorter one or two syllable names flow better with Norwegian. Oh, well. I just hope I’m on one!”
Like a dotting grandparent, Achim Siegfried Triebel stood alone on Facebook with his unconditional love. “Great names. Actually both of them were on my list. For most people breakaway is the absolute truth, considering what they have to work and how they have to work all year to make one trip. Love the names. But, it really does not matter. NCL is our favorite and I cannot wait to be back on the ship. No matter which one.”
