Hey, Who Painted My Car While I Was Cruising?

May 25, 2011 | By | 4 Comments

Oops, they did it again! Seems workers at Bayonne Dry Dock prefer spray to rollers and don’t pay enough attention to the wind. Cruisers parking their cars at Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, New Jersey, are once again returning to a new paint job — and not one they want. Cruise Critic member Cruzoholic reported on the boards that she returned May 21 to find her daughter’s car coated with a “thick rough texture.” In addition, the car’s antenna was bent and a Mets magnet was missing.

CC members who’ve parked in the lot neighboring Bayonne Dry Dock have reported on the unwanted paint jobs with some regularity. (See here and here. Cruise Critic first reported on the situation in 2005!) When they paint ships in dry dock, the overspray can blow over to the parked cars. But a past promise to pay closer attention to weather conditions and to favor rollers over spray hasn’t helped, evidently.

We spoke with Danielle Gaskins, operations administrator at Cape Liberty Cruise Port, and she assured us that they are in meetings right now with Bayonne Dry Dock in an effort to fix the problem. She said that Bayonne Dry Dock is eager to resolve damage to cars affected by paint overspray. Cruisers whose cars were damaged should call Kevin Sullivan at 201-823-9295.

If you don’t receive resolution, contact Cape Liberty Cruise Port at 201-823-3737.

Cruzoholic, you may have to contact the cruise port about your antenna, since that isn’t related to the paint overspray. The Mets magnet? You’re on your own with that one.

Have something to say about this story? Sound off.

We booked on the Summit out of Bayonne next year. Anybody know where I can get a car cover cheap?

One solution: if you come from out of town and arrive the day before you sail, you can stay at the Sheraton at 128 Frontage Rd (a $30 taxi ride from the pier). They have a “Park and Fly” program, which they also apply to cruises. For the price of a very nice room ($199 when we were there last year) you can leave your car here for free for up to 11 days for free. Additional nights are $15. We have done this twice and plan on taking this offer every time we sail out of Bayonne.
