At the Zoo: An Unhealthy Obsession With Towel Animals, Plus Win a Friend

May 20, 2011 | By | 29 Comments

Some of us are too proud to admit the child-like glee we feel upon discovering a white shark wearing our sunglasses. I’m talking, of course, about towel animals, those twisted creations that materialize magically in the cabin after evening turn-down. The Web is littered with photos of towel monkeys on toilets or body-bandaged men in life jackets, but Cruise Critic contributor Carol Sottili has taken the art of towel animal chronicling to the next level. (The animals were captured on Carnival Dream; you can read Sottili’s new expert ship review here.) Watch her video, then tell us in the comments section: What’s your favorite towel animal? On Monday at noon EDT, we’ll pick a commenter a random … one lucky winner will get “Davey the Dog,” a miniature towel pal.

Can’t get enough of these cottony creations? Check out our slideshow of 16 reader-submitted towel animals.

We had a very creative steward on Royal Caribbeans Adventurer of the Seas. We found the monkey hanging from the air vent one night. A seal in the shower the next with an elephant holding a flower the next. A frog and turtle in the shower the next. The swans on our anniversary with a champaign bottle on a dolphins? back. Then to top it off the last night we had a dog, cat, pig, rabbit and snake arranged around our room.
My wife had three back surgeries prior to this cruise and the room steward often found her laying on the bed resting her back. He and a few friends would make these to cheer her up.

Forgot to comment on the favorite, it was a toss up between the monkey (always a favorite) and the dolphin which must have been nearly four feet long.

I think the adorable elephant is my favorite. That was the best part of the evening after dinner coming back to the cabin and seeing what they made. A definite requirement in the picture taking list!!!

I always love the monkeys! But on our last Princess cruise the cabin steward was so skilled that my daughters wanted to keep every single one that he made. The towels animals are such a fun part of cruising!

It was fun going back to our Cabin to see what animal was made. The monkey hanging was cool. The snake was also great. Enjoyed all of them.

I think mine would have to be the swans. They make for a romantic decoration. Everyone needs the thought that they are cared for and the sense of being loved. I will be taking my very first cruise in November 2011 and can not wait.
