The time of year was the primary choice for us. Also the number of days, on the ship and the fact that it traveled both the Rhine and the Moselle which offers so many different views. The different excursions offered throughout the cruise and the different ports we were stopping at.

We chose Avalon having got a good last minute deal and having heard from former river cruisers about infirm and very elderly clients on river cruises. Avalon has an ‘Active’ excursion leader and as such appeals to a slightly younger crowd. You do not have to be active to enjoy the cruise, it’s all at your own pace but the active excursions gave this cruise an edge in our opinion.

Our recent Avalon Active and Discovery Cruise (southbound on the Rhone) exceeded our expectations. We chose to visit Paris for the 2 days prior to our cruise. Cabin are large and spaceious and setup properly for viewing the sights as you cruise the Rhine. Balconies on the others sacrifice indoors space for a narrow outside sitting space. Not worth it. There are no better views from your cabin than with Avalon Waterways. I’ve sailed with Avalon before and love the 200’ cabin, with 11 foot glass wall that opens up to 7’ of water, sun, fresh air & spectacular views which can be seen from my river-facing bed!! Awesome!!!

Friends were already booked on it, and so we elected to join them! I had always fancied a river cruise, as opposed to an ocean cruise, and particularly wanted to do this Saone- Rhône one.

We choose this cruise for ports and because there were options for active excursions.
The pros
The cabin and bathroom were more spacious than on most river cruise ships. The beds very comfortable.
The ship was very clean.
The staff attentive.
The food was very good.
