The onboard competition, called Stella Maris (Latin for "Stars of the High Seas"), showcased young stars on the rise from opera houses in New York, Toronto, Hamburg, Dresden, Zurich, London, Milan and Paris. The cruise on Europa, which is celebrating its 10th birthday, departed from Venice on October 25 and ended in Barcelona on November 4; the sailing (like many on Europa) was bilingual (German/English) to ensure English-speaking passengers feel comfortable from the moment they step onboard.

The young artists performed on stage in front of 400 guests, and an internationally acknowledged professional judging panel for prizes (the competition's creative director is award-winning Canadian tenor Michael Schade). After every audition, the judging panel and guests voted. At the end of the multi-night competition, three winners were announced at a gala concert and awarded prizes.
